Sheriff cuts coffee, hamburger buns from jail menu

Taxpayers in Rutherford County saved $111,566 in cuts to inmates’ meals recently at the Adult Detention Center, Sheriff Robert Arnold said.

Arnold and Detention Maj. Guy Goff trimmed the budget by eliminating non-nutritional items saving:

• Coffee, creamer and sugar: $26,000

• Kool-Aid: $25,805.15

Condiments such as jelly, mustard, mayonnaise, ketchup and salt and pepper: $23,293.

Also, they saved by substituting different types of food. For example, switching from canned or whole fruit to applesauce will save another $13,000, substituting the rising cost of bacon to fried bologna for breakfast will save another $13,468 and using bread instead of hot dog and hamburger buns saved another $10,000.

Cost reductions show it costs 90 cents a meal for the inmates or less than $3 a day.

The changes comply with the minimum standards by the Tennessee Correctional Institute. Dietary guidelines require three servings of two to three ounces of meat and protein daily. Eggs and beans are considered proteins.

“We have to feed working inmates three meals per day with no more than a 14-hour interval,” Arnold said. “Nowhere in the guidelines do we have to offer coffee. Coffee is a want, not a need.”

More than 700 inmates are now in custody at the detention center. Family members and friends may contribute to a commissary fund allowing inmates to buy any of the items eliminated. For example, inmates may buy coffee, sugar and creamer from the commissary fund.

More cuts are expected. For example, bids are due in December to provide 185 loaves of bread per day for the inmates who are served six pieces of bread daily.

“We are looking to save as much as we can on bread,” Arnold said. “We are willing to partner with private business and restaurants to get a reduced price in the future.”

Arnold and Goff will consider other savings such as serving only two meals per day for non-working inmates as allowed by state guidelines.

“We have good, nutritious meals,” Arnold said. “The food service employees prepare meals within the dietary guidelines and budget.”

The staff is looking at other ways to save taxpayers’ dollars. People may call or e-mail with their ideas.

“I take this budget seriously,” Arnold said. “I treat it like it’s coming out of my pocket. We want to save every penny we can for the hardworking taxpayers of Rutherford County to be fiscally responsible.”

Yes, medical needs are addressed in meal planning for inmates.

All lot more could be saved by cutting Arnold from the budget.

Just curious on this comment.....“Nowhere in the guidelines do we have to offer coffee. Coffee is a want, not a need.”

Does this apply to the employees as well?? I mean, hey it is a want not a need. Do we as taxpayers pay for coffee to the employees of the sheriff department? If so, how much can that save taxpayers if employees had to buy their own coffee and supplies?

Just a thought. I do like the new menu by the way.

Wow! One hundred and eleven thousand dollars from the jail mate fund? Peanuts! No coffee in the morning? Cruel and unusual punishment! No morning coffee should be unconstitutional. Good press material, however.

Now, shall we proceed to find significant "cuts" in taxpayer contributions to one of the fastest "growing" industrial counties in the nation(Rutherford),according to the "news" media. Surely, we are wasting money in more unnecessary areas of "growth" than jail house coffee, sugar, and buns.

The cost of "growth" (population boom or overpopulation as it is known in scientific terms) is a major expense in all ecosystems, including taxpayer systems. It is an established ecological fact that "more is not better". To the contrary, more is usually worse.

More politicians should have paid more attention to their 7th grade science teachers on the ecological problems of "growth". Rutherford County, for one, will not solve financial problems by eliminating hamburger buns, sugar, and salt from inmate Joe's diet.

Anymore suggestions?

I do like my Coffee, I will try my best to stay out of jail. Not a bad deterrent.

I do think the employees should pay for their own coffee as do many others at work.

Wow Sherriff, great job! It’s long past time for cost cutting at a city, county, state, and federal level.

I think that if the officers that put their lives on the line to keep me safe want to start their shift with a cup of coffee, I am more than happy to pay for that.

Good for the Sheriff! It is about time jail becomes a place people do not want to go. If they get water, their "nutritional requirements" have been met.

cmac, it surely may not solve all our problems, but it WILL save us $111,000 worth. Moreover, if you dont like the jail menu, stay out of trouble and you'll never have to sample it. As to suggestions, if you want to donate the $111,000 to restore these goodies to the inmates, feel free.

I agree that the sheriff needs to do everything that he can to cut buget but the feds are still handing out 350 million dollar boneses. Some where along the line there has to be someone to set an example. The diference between congress and inmates is purely economic.More crimes are commited by suits than Gangstas. it is a terrible situation... Anyway, our sheriff is our sheriff and ne is doing his best. I just wish that those in higher power would follow suit. Thanks

Lets not hold our breath until we get that reduction in property tax as a result of the whopping big $111,000 "food savings" at the jail. For example, $111,000 divided among an average of 90,000 property owners would reduce property tax enough to buy one cup of regular coffee per taxpayer per year. Amazing how easy it is for politicians to fool some people, eh, Soc?
