The mid-state saw its second wettest September on record last month with some areas receiving more than 14 inches of rain.
Nashville ended the month with 11.08 inches of official precipitation, which is 7.49 inches above normal for the month.
“This is the second wettest September on record and the wettest since 1979 when 11.44 inches fell during the month,” National Weather Service Meteorologist Bobby Boyd said.
The day southern Rutherford County saw flooding and evacutions, Sept. 16 through 17, Nashville recorded 3.38 inches over the 24-hour period.
Over the same 24 hours, Murfreesboro saw 1.62 inches of rain and southern Rutherford County recorded 2.74 inches.
“We broke a calendar day rainfall record on Sept. 16 when 2.69 inches of rain fell. The previous record was 1.69 (inches) set way back in 1894,” Boyd said.
Throughout September, Middle Tennessee had 14 days, nine consecutive, with rain and five days in Nashville received an inch or more.
“Total rainfall January through September 2009 now totals 46.72 inches, which is 10.47 inches above normal. We have already had almost our normal annual rainfall which is 48.11 inches,” Boyd said.
The month was also slightly warmer than average, with the highest temperature of 87 degrees Sept. 6, 7 and 8. The lowest temperature was 47 degrees just a few days ago on Sept. 30.
Overall, the temperature averaged 1 degree above normal for the month.
