Sellout crowd comes to Miller Coliseum

The weather outside Saturday was cold, but the action inside Miller Coliseum was hot with some of the best arenacross riders in the world coming to town for Round 4 of the 2011-12 Arenacross Tour.

A standing room only crowd greeted more than 500 professional and amateur riders, including many here locally for the races.

With so many riders, there were several different stories with each one.

Memphis native and one of the elder statesman of the tour Steven Brady enjoyed racing in his home state this past weekend.

At the same time, he said he knows his time is almost up on the track, but he still stays a part of it with his business partner’s clothing line, Steez Clothing.

“I still like to be involved in the industry after my racing career is up,” Brady said.

His clothing line corners the action sports market, and it includes several different styles. Steez is also a tour sponsor and a personal clothing sponsor for some of the other riders in the series.

Brady, who has raced on the tour since 2004 and been a pro rider since 1995, competed in the AX Lites class.

It is for those that race on the 250cc bikes, which is a class below the top 450cc bike class. Those bikes have the most power in the engine.

Speaking of that class, Cole Thompson proved once again why he is the best professional rider on the tour this season.

Even with some of his other professional bikes allegedly stolen from his shop a couple of days earlier, Thompson still came to Murfreesboro as the fastest rider right now in the series.

He backed that up with two moto sweeps 450 class. At the end of the long night, he also took home another “Clash for Cash” prize.

Besides the professional riders taking part, over 450 amateurs including some from the Rutherford County area also got to compete on the same track.

The riders ranged in ages from 4 to over 40, which made up more than 30 classes of contestants riding either dirt bikes or ATVs. Regardless of age or skill level, there were great races from start to finish.

The two up-and-coming riders who were profiled in the Jan. 12 issue of The Murfreesboro Post, Caden Hill and Noah Walters, each had great showings during their races.

Hill raced in the 51cc class, which is for 4- to 8- year-old beginners, while Walters took part in the 85cc, for the 12- to 15-age classes, and 85cc, the 9- to 15-year-old beginners class.

Hill said he felt like he rode well, adding his BMX experience helped him make the transition to dirt bikes.

“It gave me confidence and balance,” said Hill, who rides a Honda.

Hill finished 10th in his class.

Each rider got to race the course at least twice, which each one is known as a moto.

For some riders, they even had to race a Last Chance Qualifier.

Walters, however, had a busy day running in two different classes.

In one of the motos, he suffered some bad luck when he was battling with another rider for position on the last lap. The bike could not reach the top of the finish line jump, and he lost some positions.

At the same time, Walters got the hole shot and was near the front for the entire race up until that point.

“I felt pretty well,” Walters said. “I wrecked in front of the finish line jump, and I rolled back down and then I had to ride back up it.”

That was his second race back after last year’s arm injury. He added he felt he rode better and is getting his traction and confidence back.

Walters bounced back in the second moto, winning the race.

One of the older local amateurs taking part was Murfreesboro resident Brian Spencer.

The KTM rider was racing in first ever indoor race,  after spending many years riding on the trails.

He took part in the Vet plus 30 class. Spencer, who his friends call “the Spinmaster,” had an interesting comparison of the tight and intense racing on the track.

“It’s like running wind sprints for five minutes,” he said.

The next stop of the tour is Saturday in Mississippi.
