Second Tea Party to be held Friday

Rutherford County’s discontent with Washington, D.C. continues with a protest against the Obama administration’s programs and mandates with a Tea Party Tailgate at 5 p.m. Friday, July 10 on the Courthouse lawn.

Tea Party organizer Christian Hidalgo said the protest is aimed at sending a message straight to Rep. Bart Gordon (D-Murfreesboro).

“The main focus of this Tea Party is to let Bart Gordon know we want our country to be led responsibly and to live within our means,” Hidalgo said.

Protesters are upset with how the Obama administration has increased the national debt with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the more than $700 billion stimulus package, and financing it with bond sales to the Chinese government.

“The Tea Party is a opportunity for citizens to voice disapproval of our government’s massive spending and socialization of our country,” he said.

Local organizers have invited speakers, such as conservative talk radio host Steve Gill and Ben Cunningham, leader of the Tennessee Tax Revolt, to address the Tea Party.

Gill will address the party at 6 p.m. to be followed by Ben Cunningham, Lipscomb University history professor Dr. Tim Johnson, Tennessee Director of ParentalRights.org Dr. Eric Potter and numerous community organizers and citizens.

Hidilgo also said an open mic period is scheduled after the speakers so average citizens can voice their concerns and discontent with the federal government.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their family, friends, lawn chair as well as an American flag, and a clever sign with a direct message to our government leaders.

The non-partisan, nonprofit event follows a similar gathering in April to protest taxation and the federal government’s use of taxpayer dollars.

What a crock... Where were these people when the country's war spending was topping $1 trillion???

By: SocEtTuem on 7/8/09
Not a crock - Try the 11 trillion and growing we have in debt. Maybe you're willing to pay the $1,808,219,178.04 a day in interest on that. Worse, there is more to come.

The government has been spending money for years like there is no end in sight. This year Rutherford County has increased taxes, even though people has lost their jobs. Jobs have lost even before January of this year. Like this year, last year, the year before last, the year before that, taxes have continued to climb, the cost of living have risen tremendously, gas prices hit over three dollars a gallon. Out of curiosity, what makes people so concerned and dissatisfied about all this spending at this point? Most of the ones that complain and whine, sit back and do nothing but complain and whine. Gee, your voices want to be heard, demand change in the way government spends money, disagree about this and that. Just leave these little country town tea parties alone and nominate yourself for a 2012 presidential campaign.

The only people who are not concerned about the out of control spending are the people waiting for Obama to spread the wealth to them. The sad reality is, he plans to spread the country's wealth with the rest of the world.

The cost of the war was huge, and there is no denying that. But when Obama can get congress to pass a stimulus bill at his request that spends an amount almost equal to the entire cost of 2 wars, in a single bill that no one was allowed to read, their is a problem. That and the fact that the stimulus bill did not create any jobs....

Next Cap and Trade.... quickly followed by Health care reform, since 15 people protested downtown last week demanding healthcare reform.

Of course Bart Gordon is for all this spending. So it is time to let him know how we feel about the spending.

Costofwar.com is my source to reference against the 787 billion dollar stimulus bill, and the stimulus bill was passed 4 months ago.

Totally concerned about the local, state and federal spending. Local government spending must be out of control or the property taxes would not have gone up. State government spending must be out of control or else furloughs and layoffs would have been prevented. By the way, never understood the concept of a party room being added on to the governor's mansion when the money is tight and tax revenue is down. Seems odd. When the federal government spending is out of control, congress passed a stimilus bill. Congress needs to quit passing bills. Just like the money that was approved to fund this war we are in. Congress does not pass the bills, then the elected president can not sign them. For some that have lost jobs from manufactures that were greedy, they are eating because some of the stimilus money provides extra unemployment benefits until work can be found. It means a little extra help to put food on the table. The deficit is high and that is reality. Reality is that America's financial troubles began September 11th, 2001. The twin towers were the heart of America's financial structure. Stocks began to crumble, airlines went in to disarray, companies started to fold up and close down, jobs were being slashed, a war on terror had to be funded, gas and diesel prices began to soar, price of foreign and domestic goods skyrocketed, dow lost points, we lost lives in numbers of great magnitude, and the nation was in mourning, left scarred. The freedom that we once endured now has limits to a certain degree. We have national alert levels when our nation is threatened. That very one day cost us in more ways than one. Our then president, which I admired then and miss now took care of us in every which way he could. Our president now is trying to take care of us in every which way he possibly can. The price is steep, the debt has mounted from previous administrations. As a true American, I would wrather see 787 billion dollar stimilus, than 787 billion more lives lost, 787 billion more jobs lost, 787 billion more buildings destroyed on the soil of our homefront from the acts of violence. So have a tea party and codemn the government in the efforts that seem costly, inappropriate, inefficient. Remember, the freedom to do so is still being paid for and the ultimate sacrafice being paid by the ones defending it.

Barrettbear, what does the 787 billion dollar no job creating stimulus bill have to do with protecting our homeland soil from violence?

If anything borrowing 787 billions from the communist Chinese will make us more vulnerable

What do these teabagging parties really hope to accomplish? They're great at bashing the current administration with misspelled signs and incoherent messages but they're non-existent on alternative solutions. Perhaps it's time to spend less energy being the butt of jokes and the party of "no" and start thinking of alternative ways to fix the problems. Basically, stop being the problem and start being the solution. It's hard to come together on a project when one side is doing all the work and the other is outside throwing teabags around. The Bush administration tossed the economy in the toilet and flushed. The Democrats are trying to plunge it out but the Republicans are still holding the handle down. Perhaps they should grab the plunger and help pull instead of crapping all over the heritage of the Boston Tea Party.

By: SocEtTuem on 7/9/09
jg13: I suspect perhaps you have been drinking too much of the liberal kool aid. Pay attention to this, your future depends on it. I'm not bashing anyone here, just pointing out inescapable facts:

President Obama racked up more debt in his few months in office – $1.8 trillion – than President Bush did in seven years (dealing with 9/11, two wars, and Hurricane Katrina to boot).

Worse, these deficits aren’t merely a temporary result of the recession; the president’s budget would run deficits averaging nearly $1 trillion a year for the next decade, not including a massive health care scam.

The national debt will double. In other words, Obama will run up as much government debt as every president in US history from George Washington to George W. Bush — combined. Put simply, he’d dump $84,352 per household of new debt into the laps of our children and grandchildren over the next decade. As I pointed out earlier, the interest on our current debt is $1,808,219,178.04 PER DAY. We have to pay that bill and it's going to come due sooner rather than later. Moreover, we can't borrow more from the Chinese to cover it. Just where do you think it's going to come from?

Now we are hearing about Stimulus Two, to add to the non-job creating $767,000,000,000.00 (which the CBO advises us will actually cost 1.24 trillion before all is said and done) Porkulus One boondoggle which provided millions for rodents in California and a host of other non-job creating waste, but hasn't created squat for jobs or done squat for "recovery."

Now comes "Health Care Reform" or more accurately, a quick way to destroy quality health care and create another large government mismnanaged hole into which we can pour huge and growing amounts of money we haven't earned yet.

As the government tries to calculate the cost of health care “reforms,” realize something: in 1965, "Great Society" wonks never dreamed - even though they were warned - that the Medicare program would soar to an unfunded obligation that is now over $36,000,000,000,000.00 dollars. The next time someone tells you that the government will be able to create “savings,” remind him/her of the $36 trillion black hole known as Medicare. And then laugh hysterically in his/her face.

By: Jessy on 7/9/09
Bottom line: we all have to watch our spending. We the people are incharge of our gov't so we need to control the spending of it from county to the federal level.
I wish I knew where to start, but I don't. I am glad people are talking and doing something to get "people" take action in some form or another.

By: jg13 on 7/9/09
Great. Thanks for educating me SocEtTuem. I've read the Fox News talking points too. I've also studied the issues as presented by some of the worlds leading economists and tried to genuinely educate myself beyond the party politics. Not the point. My point is, instead of giving me the easily researched partisan bullet points, how about you formulate a viable alternative instead of just being a "no" vote and throwing a teabag. It's much easier to be tell someone what they're doing is wrong than it is to be the one actually making the tough choices. It's no secret that the Republicans haven't presented any actual alternatives because they don't want to stake their reelection on it as the Democrats have. Lets face it, if the economy doesn't rebound, the Democrats take the blame and the Republicans get to play the "I told you so" game. They're sitting at the other end of the court waiting to cherry pick a shot instead of actually playing the game. They care more about the welfare of the party than the welfare of the country. Besides, where were you when Bush enacted a $145 billion stimulus package? I don't hear anyone complaining about that. That or they just ignorantly blame it on Obama.

Same with Health Care Reform. It's easier to regurgitate the misinformation Sean Hannity dribbles out than it is to engage in an actual debate with full understanding of the bill. Again, saying "no" is not helpful. Presenting alternatives is. Not fixing it now is not an option.

It would be great if we could make a pot of coffee, come together with actual ideas and hash this thing out. Unfortunately, the Republicans would rather obey Rush's orders by going outside, wasting perfectly good tea, and praying for a complete economic meltdown. Better to have no country than one run by Democrats right?

By: SocEtTuem on 7/9/09
There is a viable alternative jg13, it's called living within your means. I have to do it, I suspect even you have to do it. You know every bit as well as I do, neither of us can spend our way into prosperity. That is an isolated absolute. We also know maybe we can live on credit for a while but the bill is going to come due and there is going to be no more money to borrow.

I am giving you facts and figures you can research yourself. 2+2 is going to equal 4 no matter what kind of politicial ideologue you might be. It's a simple anology but true for every one of us who is going to have to pay for this massive spending spree.

I've been around a while, put 24 years in the military and have been exposed to and lived a lot of history. This is the first time in my life I genuinely fear for the future of our republic. You have no idea about obeying orders, champ. Neither do you understand I bow to no one, least of all some political ideologue right or left. I call 'em like I see 'em.

By: miller811 on 7/9/09
"Besides, where were you when Bush enacted a $145 billion stimulus package?"

Perhaps, a stimulus that actually went somewhere where it could alter the economy was helpful. If they had given every tax payer $4000.00 that would have helped the ecomony far greater than what has been done with the Obama plan.

As I recall, it needed to be passed right away before unemployment would reach 8%.

Last time, I checked democrats controlled congress 2 years ago, and now control both houses, do you really think they care what the republicans have to say?

The point is, Rutherford County is not a liberal county, and it needs to be represented by like minded leadership.

By: jg13 on 7/9/09
SocEtTuem,

Yes, we need to live within our means. That is a bipartisan problem. Fortunately, I figured out early that the Bush administration's deregulation of the credit market was a horrible idea so I spent less and saved a lot more. The Bush tax cut didn't work because everyone had clued in by that point and saved their stimulus money instead of spending it. But that ship has sailed. We're in a mess that just living within our means won't pull us out of. We're all worried about the future, but some of us are doing more than throwing teabags at it.

And yes miller811, I do think the Democrats care what the Republicans have to say. It's not in the Democrat's best interest to do this alone. Going alone means full responsibility if things go bad, a lesson learned by watching George Bush.

I genuinely believe that everyone on this post has the best interest of our country in mind and I certainly don't want to leave this mess for my son. All I'm saying is instead of holding meaningless tea parties that do absolutely nothing positive, how about we do something tangible to fix the mess. Republicans need to write to their representatives and tell them to stop with the "no" and start bringing actual ideas to the table, and Democrats need to stop assuming Obama is the greatest politician to ever live and get their head in the game as well. We can no longer afford to be a house divided. I call 'em like I see 'em too.

There are many things that can be done differently.

First and foremost we must audit the Federal Reserve. This central bank "prints and regulates" the entire money supply and interest rates. The problem is that they are a private banking group, that cannot be audited. We have no details about what they are doing or what they are planning to do. On top of that, they charge us interest on the money they print for us!! This system is ridiculous and needs some sort of congressional oversight.

Secondly,Our foreign policy needs to be changed drastically. With a failing economy where states are issuing IOU's we are still sending BILLIONS of dollars oversees in foreign aid. Sounds unbelieveable right. Well read on...

The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday approved a $48.8 billion spending bill to bolster U.S. foreign policy and aid efforts, including to allies like Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The legislation includes $2.7 billion in foreign aid for Afghanistan and $1.5 billion for Pakistan as they fight Taliban militants. It also provides $2.2 billion for Israel.

This is a news story from TODAY!!!

Also End the WAR. I thought Obama would end the war within 60 days of election? I thought he already had the plans written up?? The wars in afghanistan and Iraq have cost us over 900 Billion dollars total, and each day costing another 720 million. When will enough be enough. Bin Laden's whole goal was to bankrupt the US... who is winning the war?

These 3 steps would drastically change our world and especially our economy.
1. audit the fed
2. change foreign policy
3. End the Wars

When you get those done, come on back I have plenty more.

By: jg13 on 7/10/09
RedBeard,

Great post. I completely agree on 2 of the 3. My only hang up is on foreign policy. After 8 years of a foreign policy disaster, it is absolutely vital to repair our international image for many reasons. It's tough to repair a U.S. economy when the rest of the world wants us to fail, it's tough to recruit terrorists when the U.S. look like the good guys, it's easier to get troop and aid support from other countries when we're not John Wayneing it, etc. etc. Basically, solid foreign policy will only help our economic troubles. Further, as we continue to fight the Taliban in Afghanistan and most likely Pakistan, we need to do so in a manner that keeps our allies in those countries happy. It's not in our best interest to anger the people that are willing to help and we're already on the brink with our excessive "collateral damage."

Point of note, Obama didn't say he was going to end the war in Afghanistan, only Iraq, which he is doing/has done. Troop withdraws have begun and control has been handed back to the Iraqi Government. He actually campaigned on a promise to increase troop strength in Afghanistan. A promise I hope he doesn't keep.

By: RedBeard on 7/10/09
"Basically, solid foreign policy will only help our economic troubles. "

That much is true. But our policies are underhanded (for an example google "Operation Cyclone" it will blow your mind) also eventually the money, medicine, and weapons end up in the wrong hands. Example Last year Amnesty International (AI) reported that 409,000 small arms had been imported to Afghanistan (from the United States) since 2002, but that there are less than 200,000 members of the Afghan military and security forces. Where do you think these weapons are going? Definately not to citizens to fight the "terrorists". Our foreign policy is bad. We should take care of ourselves and let other nations do the same. Non-Interventionism.

As for Obama ending the Iraq war...dont be so believing. "According to Pentagon figures as of June 22 (2009) there were 131,000 US troops still in Iraq." My friends are still on 7 month on, 7 months off tours, with no end in sight. The "war" is more like a "peacekeeping" mission that we need to have no part of. The military was not designed to be a peacekeeping force. We also have no right to rebuild their nation/government to fit our needs. Their country needs to come together and rebuild itself...much like Vietnam. We didnt stay and rebuild their government, and they had steady economic growth since the war (until 2008 when the markets crashed).

How many of you TN tea partiers are aware of the fact that TN GETS more in Federal funding than it GIVES to the gov’t in taxes? We have many fine roads and schools here that we wouldn’t have if it weren’t for the Blue states that give much more in taxes than they receive. I don’t see that you have a helluva lot to complain about. And where were you for the past 8 years when Bush put us into this financial mess and never vetoed one single spending bill?

By: RedBeard on 7/12/09
ellie,

Is that considered a rebuttal? Why does it have to be red vs. blue? I am neither, but even if I were, how could you defend the current actions of the government by complaining about its past actions, when the new government has increased spending, increased debt, increased job loss, essentially nationalized failing companies, and hasnt changed any of the corruptions of the past such as the IRAQ and Afghanistan Wars? And on top of that are pushing for nationalized healthcare?? Socialism doesnt work, believe me.

This shouldnt be red vs blue EVERY american should be pissed about what is going on. So dont go saying "oh where were you during bush administration" ....because I was doing the same thing during his rampage on our Civil Liberties.

Also about TN getting Federal funding, Our government needs a complete and total ground floor up restoration to the constitution. We have so many taxes and provisions and government programs that we are drowning ourselves. So it isnt merely about TN or any other state, this is a federal government problem. It all starts with our local officials. We, as Americans, need true representation and leadership. Our senators dont even read the bills they sign. How can this be true? How can a 1000 page bill be written and passed within 3-4 hours?? I dont care if its red, blue, green, purple, its still corrupt.
