MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Law enforcement officials are still trying to determine the identity of the male suspect wanted in connection with a shooting that left two men injured Saturday at University Ridge Apartments.
Officials with the Murfreesboro Police Department have not discussed whether they have determined a possible motive for the incident but did confirm Tuesday the victims are expected to recover from their wounds.
“Both victims were treated and released from Vanderbilt University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries,” said Sgt. Kyle Evans, public information officer for the Police Department.
According to an incident report filed by Officer Thomas Troutman, the shooting occurred at about 8:15 p.m. in the 2700 block of South Rutherford Boulevard near the Wal-Mart shopping center.
Officers responded to the apartment complex a few minutes later to find Austin Anderson tending to 20-year-old Jared Smith, who was lying on the floor, suffering from three gunshot wounds.
Smith was immediately rushed to Vanderbilt hospital to be treated for his wounds, while law enforcement officials began to investigate the situation.
“Anderson stated that he heard a knock at the door, and when he went (to answer it), he couldn’t see anyone through the peephole,” Troutman said in the report. “He advised when he opened the door, a black male was standing there pointing a gun at him.”
Anderson told Troutman he tried to close the door but the suspect prevented him from doing so, at which point Smith and Howard Stewart ran to help him.
Within moments, however, the suspect began shooting indiscriminately through the door, according to the report.
During the commotion, Stewart was also shot once.
Prior to police arriving at the scene, Troutman reported that Stewart fled the apartment by jumping out of a back window to run for help. After he was located, emergency medical personnel also rushed him to Vanderbilt for treatment.
Several officers searched the area but were unable to locate a suspect, Troutman said.
Based on accounts of the incident, law enforcement officials believe the suspect is a black male who is 6 feet tall, with a thin build. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a grey sweatshirt and blue jeans.
