Mondays are usually hectic.
When it’s also the first day of school, it can get crazy.
But things are running smoothly at Rutherford County Schools today, said James Evans, RCS spokesman.
Individual schools are dealing with class schedule changes and parents registering kids at the last minute, he explained.
“It’s like that every year,” Evans said.
As of Friday, RCS had 33,966 students registered for class, which is about 1,800 less than last year. But Evans expects the number to increase by the end of today, when schools submit their official attendance counts.
Last year Rutherford County Schools added another 4.2 percent, totaling around to top out at 35,994 students. The school system added almost 1,800 students in 2006.
Murfreesboro City Schools saw a similar increase last year, adding 4.2 percent increase over 2006’s enrollment numbers for a total enrollment of 7,258 students in 2007.
“It looks pretty steady,” MCS spokeswoman Cheryl Harris said.
On the first day last year MCS has 6,764 students in class. Monday saw a slight increase with 6,791 desks full.
But Harris expects the number to increase by Labor Day, when the city schools system releases official student population numbers.
