Rutherford County students won’t be restricted to khakis and polos next year.

The Rutherford County Board of Education tabled a proposal at its Thursday meeting that would have restricted the types and colors of clothing students are permitted to wear to school.

“Some Board members thought we should work on enforcing existing dress codes before making a sweeping change that would place a K-12 universal dress code,” RCS Spkesman James Evans said.

Board Member Dorris Jernigan made the motion to table the proposal said he was in favor of a standard dress code for the system, but thought the existing dress code can be enforced better.

The Board vote 5-2 to indefinitely postpone the dress code proposal. Wayne Blair and Mark Byrnes voted to move the issue to the public hearing and parent survey stage.

Because the board voted to postpone decision on the matter, the earliest to could be rekindled is the end of the school year, unless the board decides to take another look at the matter.

“That may never happen, depending on whether they feel it needs to be revisited,” Evans said. “As such, the two public hearings and the surveys have been canceled.”

The vote came after the Standard Student School Attire Committee had completed a study comparing policies from other districts and gathering initial public input from the Parent Advisory Council.

The committee prepared a proposal based on its research the would have restricted the color, fit and types of pants, skirts and shirts worn by students, as well shoes and accessories.
