School board delays Oakland rezoning

Due to Oakland High School’s low graduation rate and the possibility of offering school choice to parents next year, the Rutherford County Board of Education delayed rezoning students from Siegel High School to Oakland next year.

Rutherford County Schools spokesman James Evans said the board delayed the proposed rezoning after the system received word Thursday that Oakland had failed to meet graduation benchmarks for the past three years.

“As such, the school district may have to offer school choice for Oakland parents beginning next school year,” Evans said in a prepared statement.

The district learned of the situation last week and asked the state department of education for clarification, Evans explained.

“Oakland missed the graduation benchmark for 2007-2008 by fourth-tenths of a percent, according to the current data received from the state,” Evans said. “Oakland’s graduation rate was 85.7 percent instead of the required 86.1 percent, which is still well above the state graduation rate average.”

Given this new development, the board voted Thursday night to delay rezoning students for at least one year.

The board had considered shifting students from Siegel High School to Oakland to achieve a better socioeconomic balance at both schools.

Sounds like Oakland has a lot more work ahead of them then re-zoning...how about re-educating instead???
