| On Saturday, a local woman filed a complaint about a man calling in a scam attempt.
Selma Pancake, 64, of Hillmont Drive, received a phone call from a man with a Jamaican accent telling her she had won the International Winner’s Sweepstakes and would receive her winnings if she would transfer $500 to him.
The unidentified man recited her address and had other personal information about Pancake.
She knew he was attempting to defraud her and reported the incident to the Murfreesboro Police Department because the man knew her address and other personal information.
MPD Officer Finess Brown contacted a man, David Washington, through one of two phone numbers provided by Pancake.
“Mr. Washington agreed to meet with me and give me a $2.5 million check and $500,000 in cash, as he stated I was a winner,” Brown said, adding Washington required a $500 money transfer to complete the transaction.
On Wednesday another couple received a similar phone call from a Jamaican area code.
Rachel Robertson, 72, of Liberty Drive, complained her husband Robert had received a phone call instructing him to wire $299 to the caller and a company named “Gold Nugget” would transfer $3.5 million to him.
Robert, 75, declined the offer, but was told by the caller Publisher’s Clearing House would deliver a $1.5 million check and Mercedes.
In order for the Publisher’s Clearing House prize to be delivered, a “Green Dot Reloader Card” in the amount of $395.85 would have to be delivered.
Rachel then took the phone from Robert and was told “other people could find out that they would ‘be rich’ and it could ‘put them in danger’,” MPD Officer Brandon Benge reported.
The Robertsons did not comply with any of the requests and instead filed a report with MPD.

In an unrelated incident, a local woman allegedly found child pornography on her boyfriend’s computer.
Kellie Holt, 26, of Hillwood Boulevard, reported her boyfriend, Myron Wilson, 28, to MPD for allegedly having links to child pornography websites saved on his computer.
Holt said she was looking for a video on the internet for her children when she came across the websites on her boyfriend’s desktop computer.
“Ms. Holt stated there were pictures of their mutual friends on the website as well,” MPD Officer M. Todd reported.
The case has been transferred to detectives for investigation.
