| The Blue Raiders have the week off, but its Sun Belt Conference has key match ups against non-conference opponents in the third week of action.
Also, a SBC receiver showed on national television last week that he might be the best player in the nation at that position.
Last Friday night, Florida International used the national television audience to its advantage and upset Big East Conference member Louisville 24-17.
Of course, Golden Panther senior wide receiver T.Y. Hilton had another big performance with a school-record 201 receiving yards in the victory.
His performance helped FIU got to 2-0 for the first time in team history.
Hilton earned SBC Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive time this week. Fellow teammate junior linebacker Winston Fraser smoked the Cardinal offense with a 71-yard interception return for a touchdown, and he added eight tackles.
This week, FIU plays host to in-state rival and Conference USA Central Florida on Saturday at 5 p.m. on ESPN3.com.
Two other SBC teams, Arkansas State and Louisiana-Monroe, also had big wins last weekend and this week each of them step up in competition facing teams that has had past BCS success.
The Warhawks head to the darling of the BCS last season, TCU as it tries to improve to 2-1. Of course the loss was a couple of weeks ago to Florida State.
In last week’s 35-7 win over FCS member Grambling State, ULM had 249 yards rushing. The defense so far is one of the best in the nation ranking 7th in sacks, 15th in rushing defense and 23rd in total defense.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Saturday on The Mountain Network.
Its conference rivals, ASU soundly defeated Memphis last week, 47-3. The Red Wolves dominated the Tigers in all parts of the game. The offense had 611 total yards, while the defense held Memphis to 169 yards of total offense. This week, ASU heads to Virginia Tech. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. on FSN.
Louisiana-Lafayette was the other SBC winner last week, 20-12 over Kent State. The Ragin’ Cajuns will host Nicholls State on Saturday. It will be the first game at Cajun Field under head coach Mark Hudspeth. This will be the first game between the two schools since 2001. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
North Texas and Troy head into SEC territory Saturday. The Mean Green goes to Alabama, and the Trojans face Arkansas. Last week, Troy was off and North Texas fell 48-23 to Houston. However, Mean Green sophomore kick returner Brelan Chancellor was named SBC Special Teams Player of the Week after having 286 yards on kick returns.
Kickoff for UNT-Alabama is 6:30 p.m. on FSN, and Troy-Arkansas starts at the same time on CSS.
The final game will have Western Kentucky facing Indiana State at 6 p.m. on ESPN3. |
