Salvation Army plans 'day of thanks giving'

The giving spirit has taken hold in Murfreesboro again this holiday season.

Local Salvation Army Co-director Loraine Crawford said she and her husband Joe have been pleasantly surprised with the volunteer spirit here.

“When we came here we found everyone has big, open hearts,” she said.

And that volunteer spirit has carried over to the Thanksgiving holiday.

From 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. the Salvation Army will serve a community Thanksgiving dinner at the Center of Hope on the corner of the New Salem Highway and West Main Street.

The Salvation Army has partnered again with the Journey Home, which is a Christian mission that provides services to low-income and homeless persons in Murfreesboro and Rutherford County.

The group partnered last year to serve more than 300 hot meals on Turkey Day and the groups are shooting for more than 500 this year.

“Right now we have a big log of volunteers,” Crawford said, but they may still need more people to deliver to home-bound seniors for Meals on Wheels.

Volunteers will do everything during the Thanksgiving meal from serving to eating.

“We’re asking some to just sit and have a meal with those who come in,” she said, adding it can brighter someone’s day immensely to have a good, hot meal and conversation. “A friendly face is always nice.”

Other volunteers will help take in canned goods for “Harvest for the Hungry,” an initiative that will fill the bellies of the less fortunate during the Christmas holiday.

But for Thanksgiving, Crawford hopes to fill some souls too.

“We’ve asked the Journey Home to find a group to do praise and worship music,” Crawford said. “So it’s more than a meal and really a day of thanks giving.”
