

Donald and Alicia Blankenship were named Tennessee's young farmers of the year.

A Rutherford County young farm couple have bested 27 other contestants from across the state of Tennessee to win the highest honor that a young farmer can receive in his occupation.
Donald and Alicia Blankenship, Murfreesboro residents and Rutherford County Farm Bureau’s 2008 Young Farmer of the Year winners, were named Tennessee Farm Bureau’s Outstanding Young Farmer and Achievement Award winners during special ceremonies at the Tennessee Young Farmer Conference held at the headquarter offices of the Tennessee Farm Bureau in Columbia, Tennessee, July 18-19. Donald and Alicia, were named this year’s winners based upon farm and financial records from the farm year 2007. They farm 1490 acres of row crops, and manage a 100 head Angus beef cow herd located on the Halls Hill Pike. They also have 18 acres of pumpkins and produce over 2000 to sale from the farm each fall. Both have been very active in the Young Farmer and Rancher program as well as the local Farm Bureau and their community. Donald has served as a member of the state YF&R committee.
For being named this year’s winners the Blankenship’s will receive a 2008 Kubota RTV from Tennessee Farm Bureau, 150 hours use of a brand new Case/IH tractor of their choice, $500 from Dodge, $500 in Farm Bureau services, $500 from Tennessee Farm Bureau, a year's contract from American Celluar, an insurance policy to cover the tractor for one year from Tennessee Farmers Insurance Companies, and a trip to the American Farm Bureau Convention in San Antonio, Texas January 2009, where they will compete for national honors.
