Rutherford County Schools director resigns | Schools,RCS,Jeff Jordan,Mark Byrnes,Harry Gill, Education, Campus School

Harry Gill
Rutherford County’s Director of Schools Harry Gill submitted his letter of resignation Tuesday night, just before the School Board was set to evaluate him.

Gill, who has served as the head of county schools since 2003, let the board know he does not intend to extend his contract when it expires on June 30, 2012. He did not give a reason for his resignation.

“I’m proud of the many accomplishments our district has achieved in the past eight years,” Gill said in his resignation letter to Rutherford County School Board Chairman Mark Byrnes.

Gill has overseen massive expansion in the county school system, which has grown from around 25,000 students and 35 schools to nearly 40,000 students and 45 schools in the past eight years.

County Health and Education Committee Chairman Jeff Jordan said there is no good time to replace a director, but this many be the best because RCS doesn’t have any new projects on the horizon and the groundwork has been laid for the system to meet stricter testing standards.

“If you have to pick a time, this may be it …” he said. “I personally am going to miss working with him. He had the trust of the County Commission and the Health & Ed Committee. And that’s tough to get and maintain.”

Gill touted his support from the County Commission in his resignation letter.

“We also forged a strong relationship with the County Commission, which has supported us in building numerous new schools and several renovations to existing facilities.”

Those building projects helped keep the number of portable classrooms to a minimum – RCS only added 10 during Gill’s tenure – despite growing by nearly 10,000 students.

The next RCS director will have to balance, not only student population growth, but also stricter teaching and testing standards in the coming years.

“I am confident the district will continue to make progress and grow in every direction with a new director.”

The process for selecting a replacement has not been set yet.

Gill began his career with RCS in 1972 when he started as a teacher and coach at Smyrna High School.

He got his first supervisor post when he was named assistant principal of La Vergne High School in 1988.

Since then Gill has served as district summer school director, Rockvale Elementary assistant principal and Cedar Grove Elementary principal.

He opened Cedar Grove Elementary in Smyrna as principal and the school earned straight As for value-added scores for all four years of his tenure.

Gill also coached girl’s basketball at Smyrna High School from 1972-1988 where he accumulated a 345-140 record.

During that time, he was nominated for National High School Coach of the Year and was named Mid-State coach of the year by The Tennessean in 1976 and 1982 and again by the Nashville Banner in 1983.

He also led the Lady Bulldogs to a state championship in 1982.

Gill was inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2009.

Then he found out people would not stand for his backing of a lieing, deceitful school principal. He stood by, took no action and had to know he was part of of conspiricy to hide information from the public. From a good start to public disgrace. Mr. Gill, I am ashamed of not what you did as much as not what you didn't do. Weak backbone...

Oh man, now to whom shall I direct my concerns about the schools' cell phone policies? Will our new Director be realistic about today's technology? I hope so.
As for Mr. Gill, thankyou for your service and best of luck to you and your family.

Protector....
Gill is leaving period. There are no hight notes except the one chanted by sports crowds."Na Na Na Na Kiss him Goodbye" Just another Good Ole Boy that needs to step aside. Sure he worked to put out fires. He never made a decision, so he stayed on the fence and threw water on them from a safe distance. If you can support someone that did not know Bridgeman was not telling the truth, hid payments, expenses and said that checks written were voided, when they were not, is not fit to hold public office either here or any where else. You cannot be part honest and be honest.

Well jimmy church sounds like you make a lot of incorrect allegations. Do you have any proof of what you claim to be true? If Mr Gill has covered for someone that has lied so did Judge Corlew and the school board. There have been no charges of perjury and there will be none. She did not lie...Just because you refuse to accept the truth does not mean there is a lie. Sounds like your problem. Under Mr. Gill and the new administration's leadership at campus school the grades are better than most of not all of Rutherford County Schools. Campus school is listed in the top 5% of schools in the state for TCAP scores. Like her or don't like her, she has exceeded the expectations and brought that school out of the dark. The proof is in the pudding! Results!!!!! So good luck With your little quest. I think you are seeing the writing on the spray painted wall! The faculty, administration, current parents and current students humbly ask you to move along. Find another person or group to harass. We are perfectly happy with our HIGH performing, beautifully clean, tops in technology and loving environment of Campus School. Worry about your own kid's school. We LOVE our teachers and Dr. Bridgeman!

@proof- nice customer service on your part. Maybe you should quit spending time defending your leader and actually earn your taxpayer funded salary. See below:

Once again...avoiding the obvious. No comment or link to test scores and positive articles. You still can't see the forest for the trees. You can not be helped.

By: Proofisnthepuddin on 12/5/11
I have to add...I feel very sorry for you. I hope you can find peace.

Once again, attack the person who posts, rather than address the issues. The letter to the editor is an embarassment to the school, principal, and office staff. How can you make excuses for THAT? Let me guess, the writer is "out to get you." Eventually, you all will realize this Principal and the parent in the office are disasters and have destroyed campus school.

How did an article about Gill's resignation become an argument about Campus School? I don't have a dog in that fight, but the test scores indicate that Campus School has restored its place as one of the best elementary schools around. Putting the haters aside, perhaps Dr. Bridgeman deserves some credit for this.

By: MTBoro on 12/6/11
I am amused at those who try to use test scores, etc. to prove a point. In dealing with people I believe the old saying "the end does not justify the means" is very true and sounds like what is happening here. If you use illegal means to accomplish a desired result this does not make the bad means you used justifiable. It sure appears the principal backers at Campus believe the means have been just fine.

By: hikerman on 12/7/11
MTBoro, which is a better way to measure the success of a school? The results of a standardized exam or baseless accusations against the principal. And by the way--do you really think Campus School cheated on the exams?

By: MTBoro on 12/7/11
Hikerman, I never said they cheated on the exams. All I was saying is just because the test scores are whatever they may be does not allow a principal to do what these people have said and what she said in her deposition. Failing to report the theft of a laptop until she was caught and going after parents who disagree with her are separate from any scores. That my friend is what I meant by the end does not justify the means. I don't think telling your supervisor your $1600 laptop was stolen but never reporting it should be allowed with our tax dollars.

By: protector on 12/7/11
@ MTBoro Wasn't the laptop bought with money voluntarily paid by parents into the PTC at HPCS? Not by RCS supported by tax dollars? Just a question as clearly not everyone is as knowledgeable and typcially stand to be corrected by those who think they know better.
@ Hikerman, like your adjectives standardized (empirical facts) vs. baseless (subjective opinions). My friends, one fact that is true, HPCS got all A's and 1 B brought up from a D and is ranked in the 5% in the state of Tennessee! That is whatever they may be.:) Thanks Harry Gill for supporting a principal who is dedicated to superior academic excellence within the RCS.

By: MTBoro on 12/7/11
Wonder why Campus did not win? Obviously they are not the BEST! Ironically the school she left as the assistant is now one of the winners along with the principal she served as the assistant under. Amazing how those two schools have now excelled under their leadership. What do those two schools have in common? Oh I guess these are opinions also. Oh this may not be totally correct because the release was written by James Evans and we know he has a difficult time getting the facts correct.

MURFREESBORO — Four Rutherford County Schools have earned the first-ever Director of Schools Award for receiving the highest combined learning gains compared to other schools in Rutherford County.

Director of Schools Harry Gill established the award to recognize those schools with the highest TVAAS scores, which measure learning gains for students. The award recipients were announced during the Nov. 17 School Board meeting and will be presented to the schools individually by Mr. Gill during upcoming faculty meetings.

In the elementary division, Cedar Grove and Brown’s Chapel tied for the award with a composite score of 11.5. LaVergne Middle won the middle school division with a composite score of 16.0, and Smyrna High took the high school division with a composite score of 29.6.

By: kyle0619 on 12/8/11
Lets talk about those scores. Its great that they have A's but how many of you know what that means
The numbers indicate what percentage of children are proficient or Advanced level in each area
Math-62% gained 2.6 from 2010
Reading-62% gained 1.8from 2010
Social Studies-67% gained 2.9 from 2010
Science-63% gained 1.0 from 2010
What about all of the other children at this school. They are either at Below Basic or basic level. This is a choice school and expect the scores to reflect that. Campus has many more advantage than regular county school. Explain why perentages are not at least in the 85s- 90.

Everyone should go to the TN website and look at the scores. It doesnt matter if the school as an A. Look at the precentage of children that are at proficient levels. In most cases school are only in the 50's. That mean half of the children arent getting it and that worries me. I guess that means children have a 50/50 shot at mastering the material for this school year. I dont like those odds and want better for my child.

By: MTBoro on 12/8/11
Kyle, you are very observant and not blinded by the propaganda they like to feed to the masses. Take into account this new principal has not followed the Campus School Admissions Policy and has tried to stack the deck with "brighter" students. This was cleverly done by taking control of the list and testing incoming kindergarten students without having to answer to anyone concerning the true admission policy. Nobody else would know who is truely next on the list. Also forcing parents to accept an IEP for their child or else helped eliminate some of the kids from the mainstream pool.

By: kyle0619 on 12/8/11
MTboro: you are very right about the admission policy at Campus. Staff also suggest parent should hold their children back to gain admissions. Also if its a teacher's child or a sibling they automatically get in. Regardless of where they are on the list. My friend was told this just makes it easier on the parents.

If County is allowing Campus to Break admissions policy than they should be held accountable. After all isnt Campus building owned by MTSU which means thats state property? According to the principal Dr Stevens and Dr Mcphee along with the County write the policies for that school. Wonder if MTSU officals are aware of whats going on.

I have no personal problems with Campus but I do question how the county is running the education system. Parents need to pay attention. Its great that we performed better than most counties in the state but considering where TN is ranked in education is that really enough of an accomplishment. I think not. We have lots of great teachers in Rutherford County and to the one's that won the award "THANK YOU"

By: hikerman on 12/8/11
Just curious--how is it that you guys claim to have this "insider" information to violations of Campus School's admission policies. Any real proof on these allegations?

By: kyle0619 on 12/8/11
Hikerman- its not insiders information. All someone has to do is visit or make a phone call. The school has no problem telling you their admissions policy and who to contact if you dont like it.

By: MTBoro on 12/9/11
Protectee = CB, not a him; obviously you are running a block for her; never mentioned a him you are the Protector as advertised and the person being protected is the Proctectee

By: MTBoro on 12/9/11
Protector......Don't tell me about all the services because I have/had a child who was a recipient of that from Rutherford County; therefore, I know EXACTLY how and why they have motivation to do certain things. Go preach to somebody else because I have lived it. I have the utmost respect for some who were in the loop helping and have none for others because their reasons were self serving and NOT for the benefit of my child. I can take care of myself but when a representative of the county schools is using my child as one of their pawns and I know it step back and watch.
