Rutherford County Schools are closed Friday because of wintry weather. Murfreesboro City Schools were still open as of 10 p.m. Thursday night.

According to the National Weather Service temperatures will fall into the 20s overnight and Thursday's snowfall will make roads slick with ice.

Rutherford County drivers should expect a thin coating of glazed ice on roadways during the morning commute.

This is commonly referred to As "black ice," which Is very difficult to see and can result in hazardous driving conditions.

Motorists are urged to drive with caution so slow down and allow For extra time to reach your destination. Remember that ice-covered roadways can be very difficult to see.

Cautious motorists were credited with the small number of accidents reported to Murfreesboro Police Thursday.

"MPD has actually responded to very few vehicle crashes this evening due to the weather," MPD spokesman Kyle Evans said. "This is in large part because drivers are exercising patience and slowing down."

But city road crews aren't taking any chances. They will work overnight to salt roads to prevent icy conditions.
