Rutherford County names Teachers of the Year | RCS

Blackman High School’s Elizabeth Shrum, Christiana Middle’s Judy Taylor and Kittrell’s Dorothy Murdock (L to R) were named Rutherford County Schools Teachers of the Year.
Rutherford County’s top Teachers of the Year all agree, seeing their students succeed is more important than receiving an award.

Dorothy Murdock, Judy Taylor and Elizabeth Shrum took away the top awards, when they were named Rutherford County Schools System-Level Teachers of the Year.

They will represent Rutherford County in Tennessee’s Teacher of the Year competition.

“It’s not as important as when my students write me a note or a letter saying I make a difference or seeing their success,” Murdock said.

Murdock has spent 35 years in the classroom and currently teaches Title I reading to second graders at Kittrell Elementary School.

Shrum, who teaches Spanish at Blackman High School, echoed Murdock’s remarks, saying her greatest accomplishment as a teacher was inspiring four former students to pursue teaching as a career.

“I want their Spanish to be a skill they use through their lives and not just a credit (toward graduation),” she said.

Shrum also said the award means more because her fellow teachers awarded it.

Taylor, Christiana Middle School’s Teen Living teacher, said the “best part (of the award) is that it’s from other teachers.

“It’s very rewarding after 36 years in education to be rewarded like this,” she said.
