Decision to Cancel Rutherford County Christmas Parade Reached:

The Murfreesboro Christmas Parade has been canceled due a threat of dangerously cold temperatures and icy road conditions on Sunday.

CANCELLATION DETAILS

The Rutherford County Christmas Parade has been cancelled, and there is NO ALTERNATE DATE.  Prior to the PARADE COMMITTEE making this decision, about half of the entries sent notice that their groups would not be in this afternoon's parade.

When the weather bureau released new information about the peak of potential "icing conditions" expected to be around 3:00 o'clock this Sunday afternoon, the decision was made to CANCEL THE RUTHERFORD COUNTY CHRISTMAS PARADE.

The decision was made for the safety of both participants and spectators. Parade Coordinator Angie Walker noted, "Whenever something involves several hundred persons, you can not wait until an hour before to cancel. We waited to the last minute, and hoped for the weather forecast to improve. However, it worsened with ice on roads estimated to hit the mid-state by Sunday afternoon. The only safe decision was to cancel the parade."

NO ALTERNATE DATE

The parade has been cancelled only once before in the past almost 30-years.  When an ALTERNATE DATE was attempted back then, it created "major problems" since most people had set aside this ONE DAY for the "parade"....and put "other church, family or business Christmas activities in the other days."  As a result, there is NO ALTERNATE DATE.

Once again, with the forecast of peak icy conditions expected to hit Middle Tennessee this afternoon, it was decided to cancel the RUTHERFORD COUNTY CHRISTMAS PARADE.
