Rover to extend service

Murfreesboro’s public transportation service Rover will extend its South Church Street service beyond the Warrior/Butler Drive stop beginning Sept. 1, Murfreesboro’s Transportation Assistant Director Nellie Patton.

“The extended service will alternate with the current service leaving the Central Hub at Walnut and Burton Streets every hour at the bottom of the hour,” Patton said. “The route will run its current course to Warrior/Butler Drive, and instead of turning right on Warrior, buses will continue southward through the intersections of  Indian Park Drive and Caroline/Calumet Drive to Innsbrooke Boulevard.

“The extended route will then turn right onto Innsbrooke Boulevard and proceed through the roundabout at Comer Drive and back to the Central Hub,” she added.

Funding for the extension will come from existing resources, Patton said, so won’t cost the city any money.

The extension is in response to numerous requests for access to the businesses and residential areas south of Warrior/Butler Drive, she said.

“By incorporating this modification into the existing service, this increase will be accomplished within the confines of Rover’s current operational costs,” Patton said. “Access to the current southern terminus of Warrior/Butler Drive by residents living south of this intersection was also hampered by the narrow crossway over the Middle Fork of the Stones River.

“Rover bus stop signs will be placed at the intersection of Indian Park Drive and the intersection of Caroline/Calumet Drive,” she added. “There will also be bus stop signage placed along Innsbrooke Boulevard. Courtesy stops will also continue to be honored along this service.”

For more information on this change, please contact Patton at 893-6441, ext. 206.

For a couple of years service seemed to change frequently and it really appeared that the city was trying to respond to requests for service. It has been a long time since any changes have been made and I for one had accepted the fact that service would never be available for many of us. At least we can be assured that the city has not just provided lip service to the needs of the community. Still waiting for a real committment. What about service to North Rutherford and Cason Lane. What is the holdup on combining service with MTSU. Sure makes sense to only have one bus system in town. Oh, I forgot, we can't spend any more money on transit service. Thanks for effort even though it was pitiful.
