Robert Alan “Bob” York, Sr., died Thursday, May 8, 2014. Mr. York was a native of Nashville, TN and was the son of the late Edwin Gaillard and Evelyn Crawford York, Jr. He graduated from East High School before moving to Murfreesboro to attend Middle Tennessee State College where he earned his commercial pilot’s license. During this time, he began his eight years of service in the US Naval Reserve.
In 1958, Mr. York began his law enforcement career as a State Trooper stationed in Murfreesboro and parts of the Nashville district. In 1960, he transferred to the Tennessee Game and Fish Commission as a law enforcement pilot in Crossville, TN, serving twenty-eight counties. In 1962, he returned to Murfreesboro as a State Trooper and in 1971 was promoted to Sergeant in the Chattanooga District. In 1979, he became Special Agent with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and later retired as Special Agent in charge of the Tennessee Crime Information Center. During his service with the THP and TBI, he was appointed security aide to Congressman Joe L. Evins.
Following his retirement, he worked for eight years in the Business Tax Department of the Rutherford County Clerk’s Office. Following this appointment, he and his wife moved to Haines City, FL, where they lived for nine years before returning to their home in Murfreesboro.
Mr. York is survived by his wife of 58 years, Norma Jane Follis York; three children: Robert Alan York, Jr., and his wife Gilda of Old Hickory; Steven Wayne York and his wife Wendy of Rockvale; Teresa Gayle Ayers and her husband Alan of Murfreesboro; brothers: William Crawford York and partner Wendi Crosby of Nashville and John Richard York and his wife Debra of Gladeville;  grandchildren: Robert A. York, III and his wife Jaime of Suffolk, VA; Lindsay Nicole York of Knoxville; Michelle Ashley Corum and her husband Nathan of Murfreesboro; Jason Ross Ayers and his wife Tenley of Murfreesboro; Connor Alexander York and Caleb Andrew York, both of Rockvale; great-grandchildren: Robert A. York, IV and Jaimeson Zachar York, both of Suffolk, VA;  Brother-in-law Russ Follis and his wife Jane of Brentwood and sister-in-law Sara Barlow and her husband Ed of Murfreesboro.
Mr. York was a member of Central Christian Church in Murfreesboro and Haines City Christian Church in Florida. He was a former magistrate with the 19th District of the Rutherford County Court, member and Past President of the Murfreesboro Jaycees, a York Rite Mason of the Mt. Moriah Lodge F&AM and was a Shriner with Al Menah Temple.
Funeral services will be 2:30pm Sunday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Rev. Steve Odom will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Family will serve as pallbearers.
