Republicans made the “right choice” to abbreviate the first day of their national convention in Minneapolis, Rutherford County Delegate Ira Brody said.
Brody is at the Republican National Convention to represent the people of Rutherford County in voting on the GOP’s official party platform and nominate the Republican representatives for president and vice president in the November general election.
This is the first time Brody has been elected as a delegate and he’s excited to take part in the political process and help shape the future of his party.
“I mean I’m helping select the nominee for the next president of America. It’s a geart civics lesson,” Brody said. “It’s a great honor to get to represent the people of Rutherford County here.”
The first day of the convention was cut short because of Hurricane Gustav making landfall just west of the still-rebuilding New Orleans.
“McCain felt it was inappropriate to celebrate while the Gustav … was in the gulf,” Brody said. “I think it was a right choice.”
President George Bush was scheduled to speak opening night, but chose to stay closer to the Gulf Coast to avoid a repeat of the fallout following Hurricane Katrina, which ravaged New Orleans in August 2005 leaving thousands dead and a city underwater.
First Lady Laura Bush, Cindy McCain and the four governors of the Gulf Coast states replaced Bush on the schedule and called for financial and moral support for the states affected by Gustav.
The GOP did take care of some house keeping and approved the party’s platform for the November election. Brody said there weren’t any major changes and the party stuck to its guns on taxation, national security and general vision.
Brody also said the Tennessee delegation is very excited by McCain’s choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.
“Everybody could not be more excited and thrilled,” Brody said. “She’s the right woman, the right person for the job.”
