The best local track and field athletes competed on April 30 and May 1 at the 2014 Rutherford County Championships at Oakland.

All 10 Rutherford County schools took part in the event, with champions being crowned in both the boys and girls division. The girls overall title was won by Riverdale, while the boys title also went to the Warriors

The Lady Warriors received several great performances to clinch the overall title with 233.5 points. Siegel was second, while Oakland, LaVergne and Blackman rounded out the top five.

Riverdale was led by one of the top sprinters in the mid state, Joy Frierson. She won the 100 meter and 200 meter dash, and she was a member of the relay winning teams in the 4x100 and 4x200 races.

“I am mostly satisfied of how I performed today,” Frierson said. “As a team we performed really well. We still got room to improve, and we are going to keep working hard to get better.”

The distance races were led by the McClellan sisters, Emma and Maddy, from Riverdale. Emma won the 1,600 meter run, while Maddy took home the 3,200 meter races. Both of the sisters were also a part of the winning 4x800 relay team.

“It's amazing because I have her with me the whole time,” Emma McClellan said. “So when I am in a race when I am hurting I know she is right next to me.”

Added Maddy: “I love it because it’s the best competition I have had, but it is the friendliest competition.”

Another area athlete who had a big day on April 30 was LaVergne's Aliah Cook. She won both hurdle events, the 100 and 300.

“I just work hard in everything, and I always want to win every race,” Cook said. “I keep practicing everyday.”

The following night it was the boys turn, and once again Riverdale swept the final overall standings with 185.5 points, while the host Oakland was second with 166. Siegel, LaVergne and Blackman rounded out the top five.

Riverdale was led by several athletes, including one of the best distance runners in the state, Brandon Harvey. He took home three event wins during the meet, including the 800, 1,600 and he was a member of the 4x400 relay team.

“It means a lot,” Harvey said. “In a race like this where there is barely anytime between races, it is pretty cool to come back double in the 800. It is a real blessing to perform well.”

The host Patriots also had some qualify performances during the event, with Caleb Yates winning both the shot put and the discus throw. Teammate Chris Stokes became the fastest man in Rutherford County with a win in the 100.

“I just got to stay humble, and it took a lot of hard work,” Stokes said of his win.

Fredrick Furlow from LaVergne the long jump and triple jump.

All of the teams in the area are nowpreparing for the TSSAA sub-sectional meet at Riverdale, which will be next Tuesday for girls. Two days later the boys will at compete. The Sectional meet is May 13, also at Riverdale, and the Spring Fling will be May 19-23 at MTSU.

All of local athletes believe they are ready to compete for a state title.

“I am pretty confident that I will do well during the postseason,” Frierson said. “I am working hard and my teammates are pushing me as are other people from other schools.”
