Returning to the scene of a 14-13 overtime mud mugging two weeks ago, Riverdale sought revenge with a vengance Friday night, ending Blackman’s best season ever with a 31-7 whipping.

Riverdale controlled the game from the start, building a 17-0 first quarter lead with two touchdowns and a safety, as it prevailed on offense, defense and the kicking game, a pattern that would prevail for the game.

The Warriors advance to the third round of the TSSAA Class 6A playoffs to face another Rutherford County team at Tomahawk Stadium next Friday as Oakland comes visiting after a 42-0 whipping of Cookeville.

The county’s Class 1A teams bowed from competition Friday night as Middle Tennessee Christian School, playing its first home playoff game ever, lost a tough match to Gordonsville, 34-20, and Eagleville was burned by a blazing-fast South Pittsburgh squad, 50-0.

MTCS was making its second straight TSSAA appearance after an historic first berth last year. Eagleville posted its first playoff win ever last week with a 42-0 beatdown of Monterey.

Blackman ends the season 10-2 with its first ever district championship.

Riverdale and Oakland are also 10-2 with both losses for each team in overtime against excellent opponents.

Next Friday’s game will be the second meeting between the two schools. Riverdale won in overtime Sept. 18 when on a daring fourth down try Cody West dove into the end zone to give the Warriors a 13-10 decision.
