Oakland’s softball team, along with Riverdale and Central Magnet baseball, advanced to the region champion games on Monday, while Siegel baseball and Smyrna softball fells in the semifinals.
Oakland got down 6-1, but mounted a comeback through the final three frames for a 7-6 win.
Oakland's Maleia Gray hit a solo home run in the game. Meanwhile, Abby Sargent was 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk. She also drove in three of the Lady Patriots' runs.
Oakland will host Coffee County, which eliminated defending state champion Smyrna from post-eason play with a 1-0 win. The Lady Red Raiders' lone run was unearned and ended Smyrna's season. Oakland will host Coffee County Wednesday night at 6:30.
In baseball, Central Magnet defeated Grundy County 9-1 to advance to its second straight region championship game and advanced to the sectionals. McKenzie Jackson had two hits and three runs scored for the Tigers. They'll host DeKalb County in the region finals Wednesday at 5 p.m. at StarPlex.
Siegel, for the fourth time in the last five years, had to play Tullahoma in the region tournament semifinals. The results in the previous matchups were in the Wildcats’ favor. Tullahoma defeated Siegel 3-1 as Vanderbilt signee Justus Sheffield picked up his 10th win in as many starts this season.
Tullahoma will host Riverdale, which blistered Columbia 14-4 in six innings. A grand-slam home run by Brady Puckett helped the Warriors to a nine-run second inning and they never looked back.
It's the third year in a row the two teams will meet in the regional championship game. The Warriors have won the previous two matchups. The game will be at Grinder Stadium in Tullahoma and it will be on WGNS as well. Bryan Barrett and Jon Dinkins will have the game Wednesday with a 5:55p.m. airtime.
