Two traditional state powers clash tonight at 6 p.m. in Maryville for the first time in a matchup produced by the TSSAA’s controversial playoff system revision.
Riverdale, 11-2, plays on the road in the playoff semi-finals, seeking a berth in next weekend’s BlueCross Bowl state championship game where the Warriors have played 10 times previously, winning six titles.
The top-ranked Rebels (12-1) have breezed past two playoff opponents and survived a scare from another..
Maryville, now on a 12-game winning streak since a season-opening loss at Alcoa, is searching for its fifth state title in six years after ending a 74-game winning streak with a 10-7 loss to Hillsboro in last year's Class 4A BlueCross Bowl.
Maryville until this year had competed in the class just under Riverdale.
The TSSAA’s changes to its playoff system produced tonight’s unique matchup.
Riverdale reached tonight’s game with an exciting, hard-hitting win over defending state champion and Murfreesboro rival Oakland, 14-7, sealing the win with a last-minute interception in its own end zone.
The Warriors’ two losses this season were both in overtime, including a regular-season-ending 14-13 loss to Blackman, avenged 31-7 two weeks ago in the playoffs.
The winner of tonight’s game will meet Brentwood (11-2) or White Station (11-2) in the first Class 6A title game Dec. 5 in Cookeville at Tennessee Tech University's Tucker Stadium.
The second-seeded Rebels have won two of their first three playoff games by 21 points or more, including a 35-14 victory over District 4-AAA rival Farragut in last week's quarterfinals.
