Whoops! Bad idea.
But this zero-tolerance stuff is nonsense. How you expect to help a troubled youth by expelling him and not allowing him to attend an alternative school?
All it does it increase the likelihood that we'll have another high school drop out on our hands.

Where is his parents?
Why hasen't he been taught right from wrong?
Don't expel him, discipline him to the point that this problem won't arise again.

Every one has a gun if your ten you have a gun if this gun belong to his parents how did he get it.Why is our young people getting in trouble. They can talk to thier parent any way they want. They can take Drugs and be high they think it is fun and its not going to hurt them but time tells wake up American start watching your young kids I can't see expelling any child from school helps that is a vacation for them find a room for these kids and work the hell out of them at school and at home for a month or two and we might have better kids that know right from wrong so parents get off your *** and stop closing your eyes to what is going on around you

wouldn't expelling him and not letting him attend an alternative get the student even more upset? What was the reason he brought the gun to school anyway?

Bringing the gun to school im sure was not for show and tell. It is a very dangerous situation. I am not sure but I believe that when a child reaches a point where they are confident enough to carry a gun to school they dont need school they need military boot camp until they are an adult. Teens tell their parents what they want to hear. Its getting totally involved, looking through backpacks at home, bedrooms, text messages, etc. that can stop these things or atleast hinder them from happening.
