The tombstone of author Mary N. Murfree was one of the several vandalized.

Vandals committed an “outrageous” act when they spray-painted several older tombstones Monday night at Evergreen Cemetery on Greenland Drive, the cemetery secretary said Wednesday.
They spray-painted words and drew vulgar pictures on many tombstones, causing thousands of dollars in damages, secretary Betty Brewer said.
“It’s painful and very distressing to our families and our families will not tolerate it,” Brewer said.
The cemetery is offering a $1,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and convictions of the vandals.
“If these markers had to be replaced, I don’t know if their families are still left in Murfreesboro,” Brewer said. “This is one of the oldest sections here.”
Some of the tombstones vandalized were the descendants of the Scales family, who operate H. Preston Scales and Sons Funeral Home. Another tombstone vandalized was Mary Noailles Murfree, an author who wrote under the pen name of Edgar Craddock.
Staff members cleaned up some of the vulgar paintings. Superintendent James Russell reported the vandals sprayed words on the tombstones and sprayed a man’s penis and a stick figure with a penis on an obelisk.
“Russell was concerned that the marble markers may have to be sandblasted.
People who have information on the vandalism may call the cemetery at 893-5641 or Crime Stoppers at 893-STOP between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Crime Stoppers offers a reward up to $1,000.
The gravestone of H. Preston Scales was among those vandalized.

alot of the children today dont have any respect for anything or anyone & thats why this kind of stuff happens!
What do you really expect when the country wants full control over there own citazens of the United States. They work for us not the other way around. What do you think we all pay taxes for? It's there payroll!
You take prayers out of our schools,God out of our country, you punish & jail the parents for a good ol Butt spanking of there own children & you dumb liberal idiots cant figure out why the world is getting worse Day By Day?
Alot of our familys are just raising future criminals,Thanks to our Goverment,THE LAND OF THE FREE! LOL.... And you really want to take the guns away from law abiding citazens? I Hate to say this,But What a joke the U.S.A. is becoming. If our for-fathers could see this they would roll over & out of there graves!
One day very very soon everyone will see this,But it will probably be to late. We the people have to take a stand & stop letting the goverment take control of everything. Once agian they work for all of us,The tax payers of America!!!!!

I'm going to blame bad kids on bad parents before I blame the government.

This news is very distressing. We must preserve our heritage. The society has a lot to do with today's kids, and not just bad parenting. It's become a world of self-serve and not customer service. Does anyone hardly say thank you any more? I think all of us have something to learn and we cannot always blame our problems on the government.

I say they need more work to do to keep them busy. Have any time to supervise a kid working to get them off of the streets? Offer a job to the street kids and be kind and help them learn to work and the reward of making money; not crime where they have to look over their shoulder forever wondering who is coming after them. They need guidance and we, the public, could help more. If they live in poverty, they don't know how to get out of it and we should try to show them; work.

It is the parents - not the fault of the government, the schools, the teachers, the churches, the organizations.
Parents need to be parents, not the kids buddies or pals.

Whatever the reason, this is a shame. These historic headstones are priceless. If they find these vandals, they should sentence them to community service working with grieving families. Maybe then they'd get an idea of how crummy defacing graves is.

I didn't even notice any reference to kids in the article, it could have been anyone. I hope they didn't do anything to my daughters gravesite, she is buried in the older section.

My great aunt is buried there. During her life, she was very involved in preserving the past - genealogy, history. It's very hurtful what these low-lifes have done. Maybe they could employ some kind of surveillance out there.

It ain't government...it ain't just society or just kids...history has had cemetery vandals from beginning...for example, the doctor in Eagleville who stole corpses for medical research...interesting though, even scary, is the "charge' against our government for it happening!

Only a lout would find it "humorous" to paint on headstones. Would they find it as funny if someone did the same to the graves of their mother, or sister or aunt?

I agree with a lot of what is being said here, and here is my .02 cents. In my opinion everything is tied together when we speak of situations such as these. I believe it started with the government and ended with the parents. So the government takes away God and the laws that allow a parent the right to properly govern their children. The parent gets frustrated with their children and is fearful of going to jail because of discipline and punishment to the child. Social services steps in, takes the child, or police arrest the child. goes to jail. Something along those lines sound about right?
Government in the United States has always been about we the people, not oppressed are the people (as it is now becoming). I ask those of you who are Christians such as myself, how much time have you and do you devote to prayer in issues over our government. How often to you let your voice be heard in debates or to your congress people. The government is corrupt is because we the people let it become that way. Not because of foreigners, or some other scapegoat reason, but because we have forgotten and kicked God out of all things. So now the U.S. is going to reap what she has sown, and we are going to being to see things like this continue to increase at a rapid rate. May God have mercy on us all, and may we repent of our sins of kicking Him out of our lives, our homes, and our government. Pray fervently Christian for His will to be done.

Before you crucify every "kid" in town, why don't you wait and see if the police catch these low-life criminals? Adults could have done it too and there is no indication whatsoever in this article that it was "kids" who did it. People are too quick to blame everything that goes wrong in society on bad kids or bad parents.
By:
matt73557 on 8/6/09
Why are people defending "Kids"? Do you really think it is likely that this was done by adults?
GREY - No Black.

Evergreen has gates. They used to lock them at night to keep morons from driving in there. Why don't they do that anymore?
By:
acdsrool on 8/6/09
GELewis...I don't know about closing and locking the gates but if someone is of the mindset to vandalize property then a gate is not going to stop them. They will just climb over or crawl under!
By:
Onthehill on 8/6/09
Before I go accusing anyone, I will wait and see if they catch these vandals. We can assume all we want, but it is kinda like the innocent until proven guilty phrase....no one at this point knows what age range these vandals are...if they do turn out to be adults, wonder what kind of punishment they will receive? It is just a sad situation all around and unfortunately, like Acdsrool said..if they want to commit the crime bad enough, they will find a way in. I send out my prayers to the families this horrible act has affected. No matter who is to blame, may God bring these vandals to light.

Adult or minor it doesn't matter. This is shameful behavior and I hope that when caught these people are punished to the full extent of the law.
By:
G33K-Chik on 8/6/09
GELewis, they have a couple of bars over the driveways that they padlock together. All anyone would have to do is step over them. They are not real gates, but after this incident, I hope they make the effort to get real gates.

Obe1 asks, "So the government takes away God and the laws that allow a parent the right to properly govern their children. Huh? What "laws" has the government taken away about disciplining children? It is not against the law to spank your kids. It only becomes a crime when you leave bruises or hit them upside the head instead of proper spanking (on their bottoms). Judges respect parents who discipline. People do not lose their kids for discipline. If you believe that, you've been lied to.
As far as "God" goes, it doesn't belong in schools. Church is the place for religion, not government-run public schools. Do you really want the government teaching your kids religion? If that's what you want, then push for public churches, but keep it out of my kid's classroom.
By:
barrettbear on 8/6/09
As long as I believe, God and I always will be everywhere. No matter what someone else thinks.
By:
attagirl on 8/6/09
And that's the beauty of our law, barrettbear. As soon as we let the government mandate even one iota of religion, then you won't be allowed to take God wherever you go.
By:
mck3491 on 8/6/09
Something I don't understand attagirl...why do you think people should give up being able to mention God just because you don't want them to? Why do you think your preferences are more important than mine. While I don't think academics should be based on God (and they're not by the way. Never had a teacher tell me 2 + 2 = 4 because God says so), I believe we need all the good and hope we can possibly get. If you don't want it fine, ignore it; but don't try to prevent others!
By:
barrettbear on 8/6/09
Attagirl, what I believe in my heart and soul can not be taken away.
By:
attagirl on 8/6/09
I don't believe people should give up being able to mention God at all. In fact, I believe exactly the opposite. We should all be free to practice whatever religion we choose.
As is the problem with many who believe God is somehow being "taken away," you misunderstand the "liberals" position totally. We want the GOVERNMENT to stay out of religion. And government includes schools. We want the people to be free to practice any religion they so choose. You can have your God anywhere you choose, even in school, but you can't use government employees or property to promote religion.
By:
canalou on 8/7/09
Paradox...some want God in government, same ones seem to not want government in their lives, which alleviates God...shall we pray for our nation and the vandals and victims of this immoral, disrespectful unlawful act.
By:
barrettbear on 8/7/09
Attagirl, I am aware of when and where to practice my religious beliefs. Just as well, if I want to to pray and mention God in school, work or wherever, that is my right.
By:
attagirl on 8/7/09
Yes, barrettbear, I agree. You are free to mention God any place you want to, including schools and work. What is forbiddin is for the GOVERNMENT to do it.
By:
barrettbear on 8/7/09
Well, my apologies are extended to them.
