Nearly two dozen residents expressed their ideas at a recent meeting on the use of the existing Middle Tennessee Medical Center facility once the new hospital opens next year.

Residents said the existing facility should be used for an in-house drug and alcohol treatment center, adult day services, a nursing home and an MTSU science building.

“We heard a lot of great ideas from members of the community, many of whom live just a few blocks from the campus, said Axson West, principal at Southeast Venure. "We will take them all into consideration as we move forward. As always, our ultimate goal is to ensure that whatever uses are made of the campus be beneficial to the people of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County for the long-term.”

Other suggestions included an emergency room, archives/historic records, a Wild Oats/Whole Foods, a library, a park, a new ROTC building, a nonprofit complex, or another university building for the Rutherford County Health Department and Christy-Houston Foundation.

Southeast Venture, a Middle Tennessee commercial real estate and architectural services firm, has been hired by MTMC to work with the MTMC Advisory Council in repurposing and marketing the campus in a way that contributes to the city’s progress and is responsive to its citizens’ needs.

Composed of community and business leaders, the MTMC Advisory Council was recently established by MTMC to ensure the community's best interests are served after the hospital moves it operations.

The public meeting held Tuesday evening was the first step in the decision-making process.

“We were appreciative to those who came to speak to our advisory council and provide us with their thoughts concerning the future of our current MTMC building.," said MTMC President and Chief Executive Officer Gordon B. Ferguson. "We received many good ideas from the community on what they want and do not want.  Their ideas and input have been recorded and will be helpful as we discuss our future plans.”

Residents said they didn't want the facility to become a drug and alcohol treatment center, prisoner care facility, student housing and a retail or strip center.
