A sleeping resident awakened by burglars chased them and fired four rounds into the ground to scare them early Tuesday at a county home, a sheriff’s deputy reported.
Nick Pondyratt was sleeping about 3:30 a.m. inside Tommy Morgan’s home on Old Nashville Highway when one of the burglars flipped on a light, Deputy Nick Devers reported. Pondyratt described the suspect as a white man whose face was covered with a bandana.
Pondyratt chased the suspects outside and fired four rounds. Because they stole his cell phone, he didn’t immediately report the crime but left a note for Morgan, who is his daughter’s boyfriend.
Morgan returned home to find the burglars stole a handgun, gold nugget ring and two cell phones. The burglars broke into his truck, causing $3,450 worth of damage.
Electronic equipment, an amp and compact disc player and a safe containing checks were found outside the home.
Detective Mickey McCullough is investigating.
In another case, Deputy Joey King reported a man fishing Tuesday at Nice Mill Dam heard a splash and found a gear bag floating in the water. He retrieved the bag that contained what appeared to be law enforcement equipment.
The bag contained a badge reading Tennessee Bureau but Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Jason Wilkerson reported the badge was not from the TBI.
Other items recovered from the bag included eight Glock magazines, a holster, magazine cases, shotgun rounds, ammunition and a belt slide.
