Registration is now open for the second annual Special Kids race to be held on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Murfreesboro Medical Clinic and Surgicenter on Garrison Drive in Murfreesboro.
Once again, the race is presented by MMC, making it possible for Special Kids to reach more children with special needs and their families in the community. Registration space is limited to 3,000 participants through online registration at www.specialkidsrace.org.
This year, runners and walkers will again have the opportunity to choose among three distances – the 1 Mile Family Fun Run, the 5K, and the 15K – to welcome all types and levels of participants. Families are encouraged to join their children in the 1 Mile Family Fun Run. “We are extremely excited about the overwhelming support from the community and our sponsors,” said Charlie Apigian, race director at Special Kids. “We have a few additions that will add excitement to the course as well as continuing to make this race a unique and special event.” Beckett Nelson, the face of the Special Kids Race, received physical, occupational, and speech therapies and nursing services after suffering a brain injury at only 6 months old. Despite medical skepticism from physicians, Beckett started sitting up on his own, crawling, and even taking his first steps.
Now at 3 years old, he is a testament to the work happening within Special Kids. The community can go even further to help children like Beckett through impact Special Kids, an online fundraising system that bridges creativity and imagination with the nuts and bolts of raising money.
Participants can start a team, join a team, or sponsor family, friends, and individuals in the community all running and walking for Special Kids. To get started or discover more information, visit www.impactspecialkids.org. This year, platinum race sponsors include Middle Tennessee Medical Clinic, Jim ‘N Nicks, and Stewart’s Special Events. Bill Taylor’s Bushido School of Karate, FleetFeet Murfreesboro, Little Guy Movers, Max Shred, Newk’s Express Café, Nissan, HobNob, and Murfreesboro Magazine are gold sponsors, and silver sponsors include Dr. Rachel Johnson, Copy Express, Fast Signs of Murfreesboro, Just Love Coffee Roasters, The Murfreesboro Post, and WGNS.
