Murfreesboro hopes to catch law-breakers in the act with an automated camera system that will photograph light runners.

The council votes Thursday night on the third final reading that would authorize a private company to install cameras on some of the city’s busiest intersections. If the resolution passes, it becomes law.

The city hopes an investment of more than $30,000 per month will curb the number of red lights ran in town, and possibly reduce traffic crashes and fatalities.

Cameras take photographs of vehicles that run lights, one before the intersection and one after. Drivers will be identified by license plate number and checked through Tennessee’s vehicle registration database.

All violations will be forwarded to the Murfreesboro Police Department from the private company to be verified by a police officer who issues the citations. Citations for $50 will be mailed to the offender. The pictures will also be available on-line for review.

Some of the intersections in the city are being considered for the cameras, include the intersections of Broad and Church streets, Broad Street and Northfield Boulevard, Memorial and Northfield boulevards, and Old Fort Parkway and Thompson Lane, South Church Street and Middle Tennessee Boulevard.

Other agenda items:

- Public hearing and resolution to rezone 23.7 acres on DeJarnette Lane from residential to commercial.

- The creation of Stormwater Management under the Water and Sewer Department to be funded by the $3.25 stormwater fee, effective Monday, Oct. 1.

- The second reading to create the Salem Highway and Barfield Road Basin D Sanitary Sewer Assessment District.

I've got a question - What if I loaned my vehicle to a friend or relative and they are the one that ran the red light while driving my vehicle? Who then gets the ticket and has to pay?
