Red-light cameras may reduce total number of crashes

From the beginning Murfreesboro officials have said the goal of installing red-light cameras was to reduce the number of crashes at intersections.

And for the most part, it looks like they were right.

MPD Chief Glenn Chrisman will present information to the Murfreesboro City Council Thursday night that suggests the automated red-light enforcement cameras reduced crashes by 2.13 percent overall in the first three months of service.

The cameras were installed at South Church Street and Middle Tennessee Boulevard, Memorial and Northfield boulevards, and South Rutherford and Mercury boulevards on June 1.

The remaining three intersections – Old Fort Parkway and West Thompson Lane, Northwest Broad Street and West Northfield Boulevard and Broad and South Church streets – went online July 5.

The intersections were chosen specifically because they have the most crashes and injuries resulting from red-light running, MPD Spokesman Kyle Evans explained when the cameras were installed.

The new information from the first three months in 2008 of service show the rate of side-angle or T-bone crashes fell by 8.87 percent over 2007 and overall crashes fell by a little more than 2 percent.

But read-end crashes saw a slight increase of 1.89 percent over the same period when compared to last year.

From July 5 through Sept. 30, 6,626 citations were issued to light runners from the cameras, resulting in more than $330,000 in fines.

Generated 330,00 in fines. Roughly 110,00 a month. That's some business the city's started. And you say rear-end crashes have increased slightly? My My My.

You know what? If all these idiots weren't running the red lights in the first place, there'd be no fines collected. Instead of blasting the city for installing the cameras and complaining about the fees, why don't you lay the blame on the lawbreakers?

Had the city police actually written a ticket or two then this whole issue would have never come up. I am really tired of watching people run lights in front of police officiers and they do nothing. We have the most do nothing police force I have ever seen. Don't believe me drive down castle street sometime, especially when its warm enough to be outside.

HuskyLover- Great question! I would rather be rear ended by a fool not paying attention or riding my bumper than to be broad sided by a fool running a red light because he is in a hurry!

Farmall, have you ever been a police officer? I love how we can sit at our computers and judge others without even really having a clue. Instead of blaming the police, why not blame the drivers in this area that think they can just ignore the law? And I would rather not see my police force tied up writing tickets to morons that are in such a big hurry to go nowhere important - when a little camera can take care of it with less resources.

life is short- I agree!! I get so tired of these idiots blaming the police when they break the law and get caught.

Wonder when someone will come up with the idea to short the yellow lights. That way they can hand out more tickets for running the red.

Reduced crashes by 2.13 percent? That doesn't sound like a very large reduction to me. With the high price of gas, I expect there were less people driving. Spanky: The good people in Chattanoga (I think, maybe it was Knoxville), got caught using short yellow lights a while back.

A yellow light doesn't mean you're supposed to gun the engine to beat the red. It means get ready to stop. How hard is that? If they short the yellow - which obviously they shoudln't with how fast people in this city drive - these idiots are still supposed to be stopping, not speeding up. Follow the laws and you won't receive a citation. It really is that simple.

I am glad we have the cameras, but I agree with Farmall. I have seen several people run red lights in front of police officers and they didn't do a thing.

Do you know what the officer you saw was doing. it would be kind of difficult for that officer to stop someone for running a red light if the officer has someone they just arrested in the back of their car and is enroute to the jail.

No, I have never been a police officier. But I have also never had a job that if I didn't do what I was being paid to do that I wouldn't get fired. When I take a job, I do it. Should I not expect our police force to do their job?

I really don't know where I stand with the cameras. The only problem I have with people running red lights is that someone else may get hit and seriously injured. I think there are some police officers that do nothing but ride around and then there are others that are gung ho and will write you a ticket for blowing your nose while driving. I have two questions though. What this extra money going to be used for. Also, what about some type of fine for the people that drive TOO SLOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you still dont get it. what if the officer had been enroute to your house for a suspicios person or an alarm. would you want that officer to stop someone for running a red light, or to go to your house. you cant have both. people that complain about the police need to attend the citizens police academy that MPD and the S.O. put on before they pass judgment. as far as the cameras, i think they are great and i agree with huskylover, learn how to drive people!!!

By: Boo on 11/25/08
HuskyLover- Unfortunately, there are those out there that can't comprehend "it's that simple."

By: Farmall on 11/25/08
If they are enroute to my house or another, then I expect them to be doing just that, not waiting at a light. They have the lights and sirens for a reason. And they are not "on a call" every minute of every day.
