Red Cross aids victims of three local house fires

Red Cross Volunteers have responded to three local house fires over the past few days, including aiding a family of five fire victims in Christiana.

Red Cross provided direct financial assistance for food and clothing, along with referrals to 12 community service agencies.

Red Cross Disaster Action Team Chair James Goodman was on the scene to provide assistance to the family affected by this fire.

Monday, Red Cross volunteers responded to two fires in Bedford County.

One family of three was given direct financial assistance for food and shelter, along with referrals to seven community services. The second fire affected a family of three, and they were also given financial assistance for food, clothing, and shelter. Additionally they were given referrals to seven community groups.

Volunteer Gene Williams was on the scene to respond to the fires.

The American Red Cross is not a government agency and all Red Cross disaster assistance is free thanks to the generosity of local donors who wish to support their neighbors in need.

The Heart of Tennessee American Red Cross Chapter provides vital emergency assistance to help victims of local disasters in Rutherford, Bedford, Cannon, Franklin, Coffee and Moore counties.

Over the past year the Chapter trained nearly 8,237 people in CPR and First Aid and transmitted 191 emergency messages for military families. More than 16,000 pints of life-saving blood were collected from the community last year.

All of these services are made possible by more than 130 dedicated local Red Cross volunteers as well as through generous gifts from the local community.

I give blood every 56 days, but I didn't hear from the Red Cross when my son's home burned and his roommate died in the fire. Do you have to contact them for assistance? How does that work?

I was told you have to call them and ask for assistance.
