Recession takes toll on United Way campaign

The Great Recession has taken its toll on the United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties’ 2009 campaign.

“It’s been a tough year and a tough economy,” United Way President Brian Hercules said.

The tough economy took a chunk out of the United Way’s pledges in the 2009 campaign. At its close Sunday, Feb. 14, the charity to charities had only raised 80 percent of its $2.8 million goal, falling short of the $2.7 million in pledges received in 2008.

Although the organization raised an unprecedented sum last year, there were still $1.4 million in unmet requests from partner agencies due to lack of funding.

And this year’s $2.2 million won’t meet all the needs in the community.

The funds raised during the United Way campaign are allocated back to its 45 partner agencies throughout Rutherford and Cannon counties.

The funds that are allocated back to the partner agencies intend to meet the most serious community needs first. In fact, United Way agencies directly impacted more than 93,000 people, or about one-third of the population, in Rutherford and Cannon counties last year.

The need is so great, Hercules and the United Way staff isn’t giving up on the 2009 campaign yet. They are still out fundraising and have started on organizing the 2010 campaign.

“We’d like to reach the total campaign,” he said. “That’s the reason we have a goal … to meet the needs of the community.

“We’re going to make this a better place to live, raise your children and take care of our senior citizens,” Hercules said.

Maybe people are finally learning to cut out the middle man and give directly to the charity of their choice. UW pays its CEO $1 million per year.

If I'm making charitable donations, I'm not going to donate my money to some overpaid CEO.

Somebody with a little clout needs to take a stand and call this scam out for what it is.

Attagirl and Farmall---when are you going to accept that OUR U Way CEO does NOT make $1m a year? If the U Way of Rutherford County CEO made $1m a year then I would have issues as well, especially since the campaign is only $2.8m. However, Brian Hercules (our U Way CEO) does not make that much so your point is moot.

Let's just all agree that you both do not like U Way and you wished it did not exist. A point I am sure you would not refute.

U Way is a vehicle in which thousands of employees may contribute their own hard earned money to worthwhile causes. Why would anyone who wants to see a better community discourage people from making a donation is beyond my understanding.

Furhermore, when someone makes a contribution to OUR U Way

So how much of a dollar goes to the CEO of UW. Another way of saying, what is the percentage or francise fee going to the national UW?

I do understand that Mr. Hercules doesn't make that much. I just don't see the point in giving to one charity, just so they can turn around and give it to another. Why the middle man? Charitable dollars go much further if given directly.

I didn't like being pressured by UW at my former job, and I will forever speak out against those type tactics. If I want to give to charity, I will. I don't need my employer breathing down my neck, with UW standing behind them with sweet incentives for "100% participation" trying to get me to agree to payroll-deduction. It's extortion.

And why does the national UW CEO make a million bucks a year? Don't you think at least $950,000 of that million could be better spent on the people who are in need?

Farmall--I believe around 1% of expenses of the U Way of Rutherford Cannon County goes to the national organization. This is quite a bargain when you look at what they get for the 1%. All of the marketing, logo use, media publicity, etc is a direct result of the 1%. Every national organization has these type of "dues".

Attagirl--I am quite astonished how you do not see that U Way is giving every person in the county the opportunity to participate in helping out their community. Giving through payroll is easy and it allows people to participate.

I am sure not too many people would have the commitment and dedication to contribute $1 or $5 per pay period by sending in the amount directly to their organization of choice. U Way campaign takes that logistical nightmare out of the equation.

As mentioned in other articles when I confronted your misguided opinions and statements, giving directly to your charity of choice is the preferred method, for it does cut down on administrative costs. Brian Hercules of U Way would agree with that as well. However, giving to U Way via payroll deduction allows the community to evaluate the participating organizations. Each U Way organization is required to show proof of their programs and finances. So, in essence, the U Way is sort of safeguarding your donation.

As it pertains to the U Way of America making $1m I am sure that is what the U Way of America's board of directors (volunteers) have decided to pay him. In the big scheme of things looking at the partnerships U Way has with NFL and other national organizations I am sure his salary is in line with other national organizations.

It's not the payroll deduction itself I disagree with. It's the tactics they use to accomplish it. It's UW coming into my place of employment, offering the supervisors sweet incentives for 100% participation, and then pressuring me to sign up.

If UW wanted to have a simple box to check on new hire papers for employees to give, that would be okay. But it's not that easy. Employees feel pressured by the employer to participate. At least that's how I felt after 2 huge UW-sponsored breakfasts and speeches by UW representatives to the entire company. They got us all together, fed us well, then went on and on for an hour about how wonderful UW is and how we should all give by payroll deduction. Then they gave us MANDATORY sign-up sheets that we were REQUIRED to turn in before we even left the room.

It was extortion and it was WRONG.
