The Board of Directors of the Tennessee Literacy Coalition announced Monday Read to Succeed is the winner of this year's Award for Excellence in Adult Literacy Service.

“Read To Succeed is humbled by the Tennessee Literacy Coalition's acknowledgment of our family literacy program,” said Ronni Shaw, RTS executive director.

Read To Succeed was selected from a group of highly deserving applicants because of their outstanding program, "Families That Read, Succeed".

Families that Read, Succeed (FTRS) is supported by a Community Block Development Grant, MTSU, Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce Business Education Partnership, City and County Schools, Shaw explained.

“FTRS is a true community collaboration as the RTS mission promotes,” Shaw said. “All our partners and the wonderful schools, families, and MTSU professors and students that have made this program a reality share in this honor.”

The award will be presented to Read To Succeed of Murfreesboro on Wednesday, May 27.

The focus of the winning program, "Families that Read, Succeed", is on improving and strengthening the literacy skills of parents by engaging them in a reading program that emphasizes collaborative reading with one's child or children.

The goal of the program is for parents to gain valuable insight into literacy methodologies, as well as implementation strategies that will enable them to forge long-lasting reading relationships with their child or children.

The program includes a separate adult-focused component where parents will have the opportunity to learn, discuss, and compare literacy strategies, deficiencies, and goals with a moderator trained to help generate appropriate responses.

In addition, parents committed to "Families that Read, Succeed" have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with trained adult literacy tutors.

The program was offered at three sites in Murfreesboro, partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Rutherford County, Project HELP, and volunteer students from MTSU.

This is the second time that the Read To Succeed has been selected for this Award.

The Award for Excellence in Adult Literacy Service was established by the Tennessee Literacy Coalition in 2005 to recognize the excellent work accomplished across the state by adult literacy provider agencies to help adults who lack basic literacy skills.

Read to Succeed is a community literacy collaborative in Rutherford County that promotes reading, with an emphasis on family literacy. For more information about Read To Succeed, please visit www.readtosucceed.org.

For the first time, the Coalition will recognize a group of Finalists for the Award. These three agencies also demonstrated significant successes: Crockett County Adult & Continuing Education, with "BOOKS: Books bring Opportunity and Orientation for Knowledge and Success"; Gibson County Adult Education, with "A Faster Track to GED Success", and Friends of Literacy in Knox County with their 2008-09 Outreach Campaign.
