Astronaut Rhea Seddon tops the list of celebrity spellers for this year’s Read to Succeed Celebrity Spelling Bee.

Read to Succeed announced its list of celebrity spellers Monday afternoon for the Nov. 19 spelling bee. Along with Seddon, realtor Bob Parks, Murfreesboro Police Chief Glenn Chrisman, Rep. Kent Coleman, and Rutherford County Sheriff Truman Jones will join in one the fun.

“This friend- and fundraiser was created to raise awareness about the importance of literacy,” RTS Executive Director Ronni Shaw said. “The idea here is that is that if the Mayor is willing to humiliate himself in public for literacy, it must be important”

This year’s opening entertainment will be provided by The Mayor’s Skit: Burgess, Bragg & Co. The Master and Mistress of Ceremonies will be Rep. John Hood and The Queen Bee Shelia Bratton. The bee will be judged by Keta Barnes, Ben Hall McFarlin Jr. and Elizabeth Church.

Last year’s spellers included Murfreesboro Mayor Tommy Bragg, Rutherford County Mayor Ernest Burgess, county music star Chris Young and the Post’s own Mike Pirtle. Scales Elementary Principal Catherine Stephens took home the gold as an alternate for Director of Murfreesboro City Schools Marilyn Mathis.

““They were great sports,” Shaw said. “Last year was fun and casual and Chris Young crooned a few, which didn’t hurt the good time.”

Donations to Read to Succeed can be made “in the name of” one of this year’s spellers, to honor or show support, Shaw explained.
