The Sheriff’s Office of Rutherford County is remembering 9/11 with their ninth annual Community Fair  Saturday, Sept. 11 at 940 New Salem Highway.

The fair is a celebration with games, food and live music, but it is also a ceremony in honor of the Tennessean soldiers currently in Iraq and Afghanistan, and those who have died over the years.

Sheriff's Deputy Jimmy Cassidy of the RCSO’s Community Services Unit is organizing the event, which has grown every year since 2002, where it started as a very small gathering to pay respect to the people who died on 9/11.

“We had a flag ceremony and there were probably 20 or 25 people here.” Cassidy said. “It seemed like the word got out and every year it got bigger and better.”

Cassidy estimates that last year, there were 5,000-7,000 people in attendance. “Every year more people want to be involved,” he said.

This year, equipment from local law enforcement, fire departments and first responders will be on display. The military will also be on hand with helicopters, Humvees and a Bradley Fighting Vehicle.

Country music singer-songwriter Lane Turner will appear to sing the national anthem and perform a set. High Schools from Murfreesboro, Smyrna and LaVergne will also be there to perform in a talent show. In addition, there will be a large children’s area with inflatable rides, a petting zoo and face painting.

People come to be entertained, but Cassidy wants everybody to remember the importance behind the event.

“It gets everyone in the community together,” he said. “We have food, music and fun, but then, of course, we have our ceremony to make sure we never forget that day.”

Admission and activities are free. The fair starts at 11 a.m. with a remembrance ceremony at 2 p.m. Parking will be available at Murfreesboro Auto Auction and Rover will be providing transportation.
