Citizens brought about 44 pounds of expired and unused prescription medicines for collection Friday, April 30 by the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office and the federal Drug Enforcement Administration. Murfreesboro Police Department collected 70 pounds of unused prescriptions from residents at Reeves-Sain Drug Store. The medicines collected included old, unused medications and pills left over from deceased family members, said Lt. Egon Grissom of the Special Enforcement Bureau. Citizens requested more collection times throughout the year. “We are definitely working on sponsoring more frequent collections,” Grissom said. Patients with leftover medications are asked to dispose of the old pills at collection sites rather than putting the medicines in the garbage where someone might steal and re-sell the drugs, the lieutenant said. People should not flush the old medicine because it could contaminate the water system. DEA transports the medicine to an out-of-state disposal site. |
