Rutherford County Board of Education weighs in Thursday night on the tentative teachers’ contract that was negotiated last week.

The two parties meet last Thursday night to hash out differences in demands made by the teachers’ association after negotiations had stalled over differences in teacher raises, bereavement leave and general working conditions.

“REA’s team agreed to a one-time package offer that included many of our proposals and has many positives for teachers across the county,” REA member Allen Nichols said.

The parties compromised on the outstanding issues, which resulted in, among other issues, a 5 percent raise for teachers, supplemental pay for extracurricular activities, one day for bereavement leave and additional time to file a grievance.

“Obviously, we did not win every single item teachers needed,” Allen said.

The agreement must now be approved by both the Board of Education, which it will vote on Thursday night, and REA, which will vote on the contract within the month.

The board will also vote on a 5 percent raise on the locally funded portion of the certified salary schedule.

The increase in the local potion results in a 0.8 percent increase overall for certified staff and a 0.48 percent increase for the director of schools and other classified staff.

Oh, so there is no question as to who gets the raises. 0.8 percent increase for certified staff and a 0.48 for our director of schools and classified staff. They sure do make sure they are taking care of themselves. Hope under this contract the teachers got most of what they wanted. They seem to have to fight for what little they get and the director of schools, classified staff and certified staff just ask and it is given. Can't wait to see how this turns out. More power to our school teachers.
