RCS 'taking another swing' at middle schools, official says

Rutherford County’s Board of Education isn’t giving up on two new middle schools yet.

With the bids in today for the proposed Dejarnette Lane school, the board is holding a special meeting tonight to discuss the bids for both the new schools.

“We think the bid today will show how much we can save,” RCS Community Relations Coordinator James Evans said.

Bids for the Buchanan-area middle school came in earlier this month at about 10 percent less than budgeted and the board expects the new bids to be comparable.

But, the Rutherford County Commission voted last week to delay the projects for at least a year or until the economy begins to improve.

Evans said the board isn’t ready to give up on the middle schools next and will begin the process tonight to take the issue back to the commission next month.

Should the board vote to accept the bid, the issue will head back to the commission’s Health and Education Committee next week and then the Budget and Finance Committee before going before the full commission next month.

“Basically we’re going to take another swing at it,” Evans said.

The debate in the commission hinged on moving more than 3,000 county students out of 144 portable into the new schools next year with a 9-cent hike to the property tax in 2010 or delaying to see if the budget improves, along with the economy over the next year.

The county is facing a $10 million shortfall for the next fiscal year and possibly another property tax raise this year, County Mayor Ernest Burgess said.

In the end the commission decided in a close vote to delay the projects for at least a year.

I'm all for taking advantage of good rates while we can get them, but if there's a chance I or my wife may be laid off in the next few months, I'm not going to make a big purchase if I can help it - I'll make do with what I have. The economy is going to get worse, more people are going to be laid off in the upcoming months, and we Don't need new taxes to support new schools - bad timing. There was an article yesterday on USAToday.com that talked about school districts taking big hits because of foreclosures and other economic woes (http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2009-03-15-schoolforeclose_N.htm?csp=34). This is not the time to spend.

Hat4rack, we all hope for better days ahead, months ahead and years to come. Along the way, we all encounter the bad that happens along the way. Yes, hard times have hit many and many more to come. I wish the best of luck to you and your family and hope you find better days. As I would tell family and friends, if ever you need something, just let me know.

Why not make the parents of the Magnet Schools (which is a privilege) pay a small fee to attend the school. This may not be much but every little bit helps. I am for showing proof of you registration when you sign your child up for school. You already have to show two proofs of residency. If you do not have a vehicle then you do not have to show it but if you get caught then you should have to pay the maximum fine and pay court cost. I knew too many people who went to Cannon County to get tags who had children in Rutherford County Schools. Here is my question why is it that we have the highest vehicle registration in Tennessee and the count has a 10 million shortfall? Maybe we need to look at other "Growing" counties and see what they are doing right or what we are doing wrong?
