After some raised questions, Rutherford County Schools released a letter to all parents regarding allowing students to watch a mid-day speech from President Barack Obama on Tuesday.
The letter is as follows:
To all Rutherford County Schools parents: As many of you are aware, President Barack Obama plans to deliver an address to students across the country next Tuesday at 11 a.m. Central Time. Based on information we have received from the U.S. Department of Education, the speech is intended to promote the importance of education and for students to set personal, academic goals.
The content of the speech — according to the U.S. Department of Education — is not expected to be political or address any policies. We do believe that when the President of the United States speaks, it is our duty to listen, even if some don’t agree with his policies.
To that end, our schools will tune into the speech at 11 a.m. using available televisions and computers. Any parent who would like to watch the address simultaneously can do so by tuning in to C-SPAN or by going to www.whitehouse.gov. Our schools will not modify their normal schedules to watch the speech, and because of its timing, some students may be unable to watch it because of lunch and class changes. However, the speech can be downloaded after the fact if families wish to view it by going to www.whitehouse.gov. The U.S. Department of Education also has provided lessons that teachers or parents may use to go along with the speech. Those materials are available now to anyone who would like to see them at www.ed.gov. Any parent who does not wish for their children to participate may send a note to school with their children on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Those children will be excused from watching the speech.
Thanks for your time, and I hope your family has an enjoyable Labor Day weekend.

At least the students will get to hear from a man that has mortgaged their future. :(

His speech: Set goals, stay in school. Why? Because I need your tax money when you get older.

This is an attempt to get students to try to get their parents to go along with Obamacare, and after it is over he wants them to write a letter to themselves as to how they can help Obama reach his adgenda. It is another captive audience. Tell your children to keep an open mind and not to let him influence them just because he is the "President. This shows the medias liberal leanings. While they won't air anti-Obamacare commercials, they will promote Liberal ideas in this manner. I will watch this speech and then I will be talking to my grandchildren to make sure they hear the opposite side of the situation.

Promote liberal ideas? Really, Dave? The President plans to speak on the topic of education. How is that a bad thing for the students to hear?

I'll answer that "He a lier!"

Watch him slide the healtcare thing in. I may be surprised but don't cross your fingers. And yes, he want's to promote his Liberal ideas as much as possible.

Are there substantial evidence that the President of the United States will elaborate on any other topics?
Is there some fascination in exaggerating there will be more?
Obviously there are reasons why we respond negatively to this idea.
Afterwards, vow to teach our younger generation that morale obligations to respect others is non-existant.
This would be especially true when filtrated with personal views and ideas.
At most, we can expect no more or no less out of individuals that do nothing except insult.

Oh, cause it sure would be a shame if we put emphasis on education for once. Coming from one of the most influential people in the world

Keep all the children as far away fron this person as possible.
Most adults are beginning to realize the mistake they made when they voted for IT.
Ashame they woke up too late

He ran on the idea of hope and change. Well, I hope he doesn't do anymore change since he has tripled the national debt in just 7 1/2 months and is trying to tax us to death with Cap and Tax, and trying to grab control of our healthcare.

Why would anyone think it's a bad idea for the President to encourage our kids in their education and goal setting? When did these become bad things? I can't believe there is even an option to not let the kids watch this speech.
I'm much more worried about what our kids are learning at home about political issues than anything President Obama could tell them. It seems all we are doing right now is teaching them to hate ideas that are different from theirs and not be open minded about anything.
If you must be concerned about this speech, watch it yourself and discuss it with your kids, openly and rationally. That's the message we should be sending to our children.

These parents are afraid of the speech. They're afraid their kids might find out that our president is black.

It's high time this country paid attention to "both" our health and education crisis' and took these off the back burner. The president sets an excellent example for millions of children "and" grandchildren throughout the world who would otherwise have had no hope, no reason to change.
It's amazing how so many just keep focusing on what Obama's spent in his first year. Do you all really believe if McCain was elected, the money would be just sitting pretty, collecting fairy dust while they watched this country's citizens suffer even more?

etech30 on 9/4/09
Really attagirl? Why wasn't I told? Did anyone else know our president was black? I'm always the last to know these things....Shheeezzzz.....
By:
Geana on 9/4/09
Umm, no... Our president is black "and white" :)
By:
etech30 on 9/4/09
Well, I didn't want to point out the obvious....but I didn't want to make anyone "uncomfortable". :-)

In 1991 when President George H.W. Bush addressed the nation's school children, my children were already out of school and my grandchildren weren't born yet. However, I doubt that parents had to be reassured that the content of the address wasn't political nor addressed policies nor were parents given a choice to have their kids opt out of the opportunity to hear their President speak to their children. I find the vitriol in these comments appalling. Regardless of your political affiliation, Barrack Obama is your President and even if you don't respect the man, the office deserves respect.
By:
SocEtTuem on 9/4/09
Too bad, Xeneith, the left didn't feel that way or exhibit the same degree of respect for the "office" when Bush occupied it.
That said, if my kids were school age, they would be out that day, opt out or no. Moreover,I would be preparing to replace some School Board members come the next election to prove the system really works.
Bypassing the local system with "workbooks" coming directly from the federal government should set off alarms for everyone, except perhaps, for those already firmly and permanently attached to the nipple of mother government.

KAB on 9/4/09
Why is it so hard for people to accept the fact that President Obama is the President of the United States? He deserves our respect. As a parent, I have no problem with my children listening to the President and respecting him. He was elected!!! There really is no need for so much hate. LIFE IS TOO SHORT ...

It's sad that you have to put a disclaimer on respecting the words of the man our country elected to be its leader. I am glad I live in a county that is respectful of our president and what he has to say, despite personal political views. And yes, I would say this no matter what political party our leader belonged to.

Exaggeration spreads rumors and paranoia. They are not "workbooks," but activity outlines, teachers can use to apply to their individual classrooms if they so choose.
Another example of exaggerated rumor just passed on to me in personal email by my own sibling: "You should keep the kids home from school on Tuesday, obama is making it
mandatory for all kids to attend only the liberals and dems agree"
The facts are:
The U.S. Department of Education INVITES students of all ages, teachers, and administrators to participate in this historic moment by watching the president deliver the address, which will be broadcast live on the White House Web site (http://www.whitehouse.gov/live/) and on C-SPAN at 12:00 p.m., ET. We also encourage educators to use this moment to help students get focused and inspired to begin the new academic year. The Department of Education OFFERS EDUCATORS A MENU OF CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES — CREATED BY ITS TEACHERS-IN-RESIDENCE, THE TEACHING AMBASSADOR FELLOWS — to help engage students in the address and stimulate classroom discussions about the importance of education.
I will not excuse my own children from listening to the presidential address. CHILDREN ARE OUR FUTURE. They need to know what is going on.

Wow... what is really going on?? I am going to encourage my children to watch the entire speech if they can. Then, I will discuss it with them when they get home and probably watch it again. Why is it so hard for people to respect the office even if they don't respect the person. As KAB said, President Obama is the President of the United States. Life really is too short to continue harnessing so much hate. For those that are opposed to letting their children watch this speech, why not tell us your true feelings as to why you oppose it??

When I was in school they called these lessons civics. Now apparently you can opt out of learning civics...gosh I wish I had known that back then! Come on America! How are your children going to be critical thinkers if they never experience two sides of a debate, listen to others, and assess arguments? Do you really think someone can brainwash someone in 20 minutes? Give me a break! Our children could use these encouragements regardless from whose mouth they come. Talk about making a mountain out of molehill! Geesh!
By:
attagirl on 9/4/09
Soc, you appear to be considerably out-numbered. Maybe that should be an indication to you that you should re-think your prejudices.
By:
publius on 9/6/09
I think that you all should be ashamed. What are you teaching our children? disrespect and hatred. Our national financial problems are from a war against a nation that was no threat to us. Remember that it was G Bush's bill to bail out the banks with out accountability. Both Senator Obama and Senator McCain voted for it. Ronald Reagan spoke to school kids about Taxes! I don't remember republicans concerned about our children being indoctrinated then. Right is right wrong is wrong. Your a hypocrite if you don't condemn Reagan for blatant politics
and scream loud when The current President tells tells kids stay in school. Bolt action if you have kids I hope they are able to pay taxes, and not be a burden to society. Paying taxes That will most likely happen if they stay in school.
