Brown’s Chapel Elementary teacher Jo Allen never knew the comforts of an indoor toilet until she was in high school.

Blackman High teacher Ann Stewart wed at age 19 to a man she’d only known for a couple of months, and they remained happily married for 30 years until he passed away.

LaVergne Lake Elementary teacher Melissa Young has her classroom decorated with airplanes and her husband is a pilot, but she is terrified of flying.

These anecdotes are just a few examples of things people would be surprised to know about these teachers. But no one should be surprised to know they are among 45 educators to be named Rutherford County Teachers of the Year for 2010-2011.

Each year, Rutherford County Schools celebrates excellence in the classroom by naming a Teacher of the Year for each school, and then from those, selecting a Teacher of the Year for elementary, middle and high school. Teachers of the Year are selected by their peers at each school.
Some of this year’s award winners have been teachers in Rutherford County for as few as two years, while others have been with the school district for 30. In all, they have given a combined 477 years of service to the students and families of Rutherford County.

All 45 Teachers of the Year will be recognized for their achievements at a reception with their co-workers and families on March 16, 2011 at the Stones River Country Club in Murfreesboro.

This year’s district-level Teachers of the Year are: Cindy Cliche of McFadden School of Excellence (elementary level); Amy Guthrie of Central Magnet School (middle level); and Sharon L. Truax of Smyrna High School (high school level). They will now proceed to the regional competition with the potential to reach state-level recognition.

Hope none of these teachers belong to the union. That would be a shame.

I hope they do have a union, I would hate to have them not protected from those in power with an ax to grind.
I do not get why you think that the unions are the problem with our economy. Bank of America took tarp money and paid it back with interest. They made a huge profit this year. THEY, BANK OF AMERICA, PAID NO TAXES. I don't think there are union workers with a deal as sweat as that. Sprtman your outrage is misplaced. Maybe your a banker!
