Both Rutherford County Schools are still growing, albeit, at a slower rate, but city schools sees a drop in enrollment.
County schools have grown about 3 percent, or nearly 1,000 students over the end of the school year. Last year saw a 2.3 percent increase, which is less than the 4 percent to 5 percent increases the system has seen in the past.
At the end of last year, RCS had a student population of 36,414 and 36,742 at the beginning of the school year in 2008.
As of last Monday, the school system has chalked up 37,464 students.
“So depending on which numbers you compare, we have grown by 800-1,000 students. The numbers will continue to fluctuate until after Labor Day,” RCS spokesman James Evans said. The Tuesday after Labor Day is when official school system populations are released.
To put it in perspective new elementary schools are built to accommodate 850-1,000 students. So the system has added enough students to fill an elementary school.
On the other hand, Murfreesboro City Schools have only added 24 students since last year, going from 6,858 at the end of last year to 6,882 last Monday, Finance/Administrative Services Director Gary Anderson said.
