The director of schools for the Rutherford County School system could be sticking around for at least another year. That is what the School Board will decide Saturday, June 19.
A special meeting was called in order to discuss the possible extension of current Director Harry Gill’s contract, which expires June 30, 2011.
“Mr. Jernigan wanted to put it on the agenda,” Board of Education Chairman Richard Wise said, referring to fellow school board member Dorris Jernigan.
Jernigan and Wise both felt that the current board should have a chance to vote on the issue of extending the contract, rather than have new members, who are not as familiar with Gill’s work, vote.
“What would they know about Mr. Gill’s performance other than what they read in the paper,” Wise said. “We opened two new middle schools. We opened a magnet school. Our test scores are high.”
Wise said that it is customary for these kinds of talks to take place when moving into the final year of the director’s contract.
“I expect us to vote to extend his contract, I think he has done an excellent job,” Wise said. “I wouldn’t know why anyone would vote against him.”
The school board had a meeting planned for June 17, but this meeting would not allow the board enough time to meet a required 15-day notice that must be given to the director of schools in contract discussion. Wise said that the notice was put in place to protect the director from any spur of the moment meetings that could affect his future. |
