Rutherford County Director of Schools Harry Gill Jr., right, accepts the 2007-2008 A.F. Bridges School System Administrator of the Year award by the TSSAA for Athletic District 4.
Rutherford County Director of Schools Harry Gill Jr. was named the recipient of the 2007-2008 A.F. Bridges School System Administrator of the Year award by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) for Athletic District 4.

The award was presented to Director Gill on Nov. 6 at Hunters Lane High School in Nashville.

Besides being the director of one of the highest scoring school districts in Tennessee, Gill also is a former championship winning coach.

Gill coached girls basketball at Smyrna High School from 1972-1988 where he accumulated a 345-140 record. During that time, he was nominated for National High School Coach of the Year and was named Mid-State coach of the year by The Tennessean in 1976 and 1982 and again by the Nashville Banner in 1983. He also led the Lady Bulldogs to a state championship in 1982.

As Director of Schools, Gill has overseen tremendous student growth in Rutherford County’s school system, including the opening of several new schools and the addition of more than 7,000 new students. Under Mr. Gill’s leadership, the school system has consistently posted some of the highest scores in the state on the Tennessee Report Card, including straight A’s on the 2008 report.

The A.F. Bridges awards are named in honor of the first executive secretary for the TSSAA. Awards are presented in nine athletic districts across Tennessee.

Recipients are nominated for the award based on their contributions to high school athletics and for promoting positive characteristics to young people.
