Rutherford County Board of Education will receive more information tonight to decide which company will install surveillance cameras on all of its contracted buses.

The board asked at its Oct. 2 meeting to see presentations from the top three bidders before making a final decision.

The board received bids from 11 different contractors to install cameras on 146 buses contracted to the school system. Bids for installing the cameras ranged from $1,586.21 to more than $3,000 per bus.

A special bus-camera committee reviewed all the proposals and recommended IVS (AngelTrax) for the contract.

However, several board members expressed concern at the October meeting that they didn’t have enough information from the company to make an informed decision.

The board will get its chance to hear from three vendors – 247 Security Inc., IVS, Inc. (AngelTrax), and Mid-South Bus – at tonight’s meeting.

The top three bids were from IVS Inc. from Newton, Ala., who actually had the lowest two bids for $1,586.21 and $1,623.13 per camera. The company was followed by 247Security Inc. from Alpharetta, Ga. for $1,710 per camera and Mid-South Bus from Murfreesboro for $2,044.09 per camera.

The board expects the total cost for installation to fall between $200,000-$260,000, depending on the bid selected.

The need for cameras on all Rutherford County Schools buses arose after several incidents this year with students, including an alleged sexual assault and the alleged assault of a bus driver by two students.

How can one company have two different bids? And both lowest?

The highest bid is $100,000 when the next innocent child gets hurts before deciding which camera of $2,000 gets installed.

I think that cameras should be included as part of the bid when busses are purchased. It might be cheaper than a retrofit.
