A man charged with four counts of rape and burglary of a 25-year-old woman Sunday on Bradyville Pike is no stranger to Murfreesboro Police.

Defendant Joseph Michael Thomas, 24, of Bradyville Pike was charged after police identified him from a video surveillance camera.

Detective Wayne Lawson accused Thomas of breaking into the woman’s home and raping her four different times. He is being held on $500,000 bond at Rutherford County Adult Detention Center.

Murfreesboro Police Records showed Thomas was either arrested or cited into court 15 times since 2005.

Charges ranged from aggravated burglary in 2006 when Officer Michael Reeves found Thomas asleep on the bed in a model apartment at Chelsea Place to citations for stealing steaks from Kroger’s. He was also charged twice with violating probation.

He served time in the state Department of Correction but his sentence ended in 2008.

What a great legal system we have.

Let's just face it, our legal system sucks and it is getting worse!

I can't wait to hear some of the clowns on this board defend one of there own. This guy is a drain on our economy. I really hope the victim can find peace one day. Even after the accused is found guilty, the punishment doesn't compare to the road to recovery for the victim. Thats where our legal system needs to be fixed.

Are we willing to pay for the needed resources to properly process a case like this?

By: Macgyver on 9/23/09
I'd rather pay for that, than for a cop to sit at a computer all day to write tickets for people making a right hand turn on red from the left lane. To me this guy is a bigger problem than a "right on red" offender!

Tickets make money, this guy has no money.

It is not the police officers who are putting these criminals back on the streets. It's the DA and defense attourneys making deals, and the judges approving those deals. Let's put the blame where it belongs. Handyman is absolutely right!

When we are willing to pay higher taxes to properly staff DA and PD offices, and the money for jails, those quick deals would not be necessary.

We could also start holding parole boards responsible, and see how many they let out then. Especially when they have a lengthy record already. Such a burden on society.

If a doctor treating this guy for something screwed up, the guy would have a right to sue. If a judge or whomever screws up and lets him out of prison then he harms someone, what do you do then? You reelect the same judge.

We get the justice we're willing to pay for.

Macgyver you should really try to stay on Topic, and red lights has nothing to do with this very bad situation!! How Inconsiderate you are!!

Let's see - he was arrested for sleeping in an unoccupied apartment and for stealing food from Kroger. Yes, let's give him the death penalty.

His agg burglary charge means he broke into a building (not a home). Again, let's give him the death penalty.

Now for the rape, I'm with ya - there is no punishment harsh enough. But for the past crimes that are listed in this article, it is perfectly reasonable that he's was out.

We don't have the facilities to give every misdemeanor offender a year in jail. We simply don't. Without the plea deals people would be waiting 5-6 years for a trial, which violates the constitution.

Instead of griping, how about offering some solution?

Attagirl, your right for those offenses, but arrested/cited 15 times. I think thats called a pattern. Its very possible that they are all minor violations. But 15 times is a bit much to continue slapping him on the wrist.
