The Middle Tennessee men’s basketball coaching staff will join college basketball coaches across the country in wearing tennis shoes to coach on Saturday, Jan. 30 as part of Coaches vs. Cancer.
Coaches vs. Cancer is a collaboration of the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) where collegiate coaches wear sneakers instead of dress shoes on the sideline to raise cancer awareness. Coaches vs. Cancer also reminds fans that by making healthy lifestyle choices, such as regular exercise and a healthy diet, they can reduce their own cancer risk.
The Blue Raider coaching staff is taking it a step further this season and using this event as a tool to raise money for cancer research. Middle Tennessee has teamed with Middle Tennessee Medical Center, the official healthcare provider of Blue Raider athletics, to raise cancer awareness in Murfreesboro and Rutherford County with all of the money raised going to the MTMC Cancer Research Center.
MTMC’s Regional Cancer Center utilizes innovative cancer treatments, integrated therapies and comprehensive education and prevention in the battle against cancer. Through this advanced, patient-centered approach, MTMC gives hope to thousands across Middle Tennessee and is winning the war against cancer - one patient at a time.
Head coach Kermit Davis and his wife Betty will donate $100 for every three-pointer made during the Blue Raiders’ game with North Texas and asks all fans to pledge and donate a minimum of $5 per three-pointer or a one time donation of $20.
“We are really excited about participating in the Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers on Saturday when we play North Texas. I know everyone gets touched by cancer. Betty’s dad is a recovering cancer patient and is totally cancer free. My mom went through cancer surgery this summer and is doing fantastic,” Davis said. “Hopefully like our family and other families who have been touched by cancer can come to Murphy Center on Saturday wear their sneakers, get their tickets for five dollars and make a donation to the cancer research center here in Murfreesboro. Hopefully we will have a great night, make a lot of three pointers and raise some money.”
Everyone who makes a donation will receive a T-shirt and will have their name entered in a drawing to win a Nike warm-up suit and a pair of Nike shoes. Pledges must be fulfilled postgame after the accumulation of three-pointers made, once the transaction has been completed fans will received their official Coaches vs. Cancer T-shirt.
All fans are asked to wear their sneakers to the game to support this cause. Those who come to the gate to purchase a ticket that night wearing sneakers can purchase a ticket for $5 which is regularly priced at $10.
The Blue Raiders will play host to North Texas at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30 in the middle of a three-game home stand in Murphy Center. |
