The second annual Run with Scissors 5K off-road race was held Saturday morning at Richard Seigel Soccer Complex in Murfreesboro.

A race that not only had the challenge of running on and off the pavement but also collected supplies for area schools as part of the entry fee.

More than 70 runners registered for the race that started at 7 a.m. on the certified course. One mile was contested on pavement and the remaining distance on multisurfaces that included the grass soccer fields of the park.

The race is sponsored by the Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Department and is an off shoot of the summer running series, which trains three days a week under the direction of Jennifer Joines, Wellness and Fitness coordinator at SportsCom.

James Pollard of Murfreesboro was the overall winner of the event with a time of 22:31.

“This was my first time to run this race,” Pollard said after easily out distancing the field to take first place.

“It is really different running on different surfaces. I really like the race. It was well designed and straight forward. I will come back to do this one again,” he continued.

Finishing second overall, and first female, was local doctor Elizabeth LaRoche.

“I ran this race last year and I like running on different surfaces, “ said LaRoche, who completed a half-Ironman last month in Texas, finishing third in her age group, and is training for another IronMan qualifier in Miami in October.

"This type of race is good for your legs, good for your muscles and it works on your balance also," she said. "I like this race; it is a good one.”

Third place overall was Lizzy Orcutt, a 11-year-old student at Seigel Middle School.

“It wasn’t that hard running on grass and pavement,” said Orcutt, who runs twice a week. “I play soccer and I run to train for it.”

Following Pollard in the men’s overall division was Joe Nutter in second place and Riley Davis in third place. Finishing third overall in the women’s division behind LaRoche and Orcutt was Amanda Moore.

“Another successful event for the Murfreesboro Parks and Rec. Department,” said Thomas Laird, the athletic superintendent for Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation.

“Jennifer did another great job with the race, Project Go brought kids out that help with the water stop, and the maintenance staff did another great job laying out the course across the complex,” Laird said. “The event is a good one, we will build on it and make it bigger next year.”
