Lisa Zindel, Susan G. Komen for the Cure board member; Lisa Terry, Primary Care and Hope Clinic CEO; Kathy Parolini, Susan G. Komen for the Cure executive director, celebrate the clinic's Susan G. Komen grant.
Nashville – The Greater Nashville Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure awarded 13 Middle Tennessee nonprofits more than $690,000 in grants.

The grants will help fund community initiatives dedicated to raising awareness, providing screenings and treating breast cancer.

The 2010-11 grantees include Murfreesboro’s Primary Care & Hope Clinic and Middle Tennessee Medical Center, as well as the American Cancer Society, Bastion Inc., Gilda’s Club Nashville, Friends In General, Meharry Medical College, Metro Public Health Department, The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation, Saint Thomas Health Services West, Siloam Family Health Center, Tennessee Department of Public Health and YMCA of Middle Tennessee.

“All these organizations work diligently to address the breast health needs of the underserved population throughout Middle Tennessee and Komen Greater Nashville is pleased to support our fellow non-profits,” said Kathy Parolini, executive director of Greater Nashville Affiliate Susan G. Komen for the Cure. “All of these amazing organizations provide much needed services that range from offering free mammograms through the Friends In General Mammograms in May program to providing rural transportation assistance through the Minnie Pearl Cancer Center.”

The largest percentage of money raised for Komen Greater Nashville is the organization’s annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure event that is scheduled for Oct. 9 in Brentwood’s Maryland Farms.

“Our annual events and generous donors make it possible for us to give so much money to local organizations that need additional funding,” Parolini said.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Komen Greater Nashville Affiliate began when Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement.

The Greater Nashville Affiliate of Komen for the Cure is working to better the lives of those facing breast cancer in the local community. They join more than a million breast cancer survivors and activists around the globe as part of the world’s largest and most progressive grassroots network fighting breast cancer.

Through events like the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, the Komen Greater Nashville Affiliate has invested more than $3.0 Million in community breast health programs in 11 counties in Middle Tennessee.

Up to 75 percent of net proceeds generated by the Affiliate stay in the Middle Tennessee area. The remaining income goes to the national Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grants Program to fund research.
