President visits upper Midwest to talk gun safety

The debate over gun safety resumed this week, as President Barack Obama is taking his plans outside of Washington, D.C., for the first time, with a visit to Minnesota.

Obama will meet this afternoon with law enforcement officials in Minneapolis, the scene of a deadly workplace shooting last fall. Six were murdered, including the father of Sami Rahamim, who said the issue goes well beyond the mass shootings that make the news.

On Sept. 27, 2012, Andrew Engledinger was fired from his job at Accent Signage and then went on a shooting rampage, killing six before turning the gun on himself.

"Big cities - Minneapolis, Detroit, Philadelphia, Chicago - experience something more like slow-motion mass murder," Rahamim said. "People are being killed in single-victim, multiple-victim shootings on a daily basis. Thirty-four Americans are killed every day."

Those opposed to any type of gun restrictions contend their rights are protected by the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights and that the proposals will do little to actually solve the problems surrounding gun violence.

However, Rahamim said, there is much that the nation can be doing better to prevent gun violence, without infringing on the rights of gun owners.

"People, when they see the label 'gun control' on something, they turn away," he said. "Well, we're not looking for gun control. We're looking for reasonable solutions to reduce gun violence. There's a lot of stuff there that people would agree on, if only they would take the time to look and have the discussion."

It states in the bill of rights that American citizens have the right to bear arms.
I agree with this amendment to a certain degree. I believe that one has the right to protect themselves and or family. One should be able to have a basic gun like a forty-five caliber or nine millimeter but having a machine pistol makes no sense at all. One man does not need to have an assault rifle in his home to defend his family this is past excessive. I agree with the president on getting a grip on gun control we do need to be more specific on the bill and count down on who has access to guns. Not everyone is sane enough to posses a gun so there needs to be some kind of evaluation on everyone when they go to obtain a gun license. This would help cut back on just anyone being able to gain access to a gun or licenses. Thirty-four Americans are killed everyday and I believe this number could decrease if we as a nation come together and agree on stricter policy on guns. However if gun control laws do get stricter this may not be the answer to completely stop gun violence but its definitely a good start.
