The Riverdale girls have taken no prisoners and left no doubt.
The Lady Warriors are 18-3 (5-0 District) and appear to be ready for Murphy Center.
No one has solved their press and no one in the district can matchup. Even worse for the opposition, the Lady Warriors appear to grounded, sure of themselves – but not over confident – and, perhaps most importantly, they appear to be supportive of each other.
At 18-2 (4-1 District) and with a road win at Blackman, Oakland has a solid claim on second. The Lady Pats have their best team in at least six years and have beaten each team below them in the standings.
NOTE: Oakland has an alumni night for all former players, managers and coaches at 5 p.m. Feb. 3 during their game against Blackman.
The Blackman girls 16-3 (3-2 District) have a great year going as well. The Lady Blaze could still finish second if they win at Oakland and get a little help.
Siegel at 11-11 (2 -3 District) are headed for the dreaded fourth place but the Stars play hard and may spoil all my predictions before they are done. No more injuries please!
Smyrna is 7-15 (1-4 District) appear headed for fifth but the Lady Bulldogs also possess the qualities to upset someone the second time around and improve their position.
La Vergne 2-16 (0-5 District) has shown some progress but this is painful I’m afraid.
In boys action, the district is not as strong as the girls but it is more balanced and unpredictable.
My opinion has not changed since day one: Blackman will win it but Siegel might.
The Blaze are 16-2 (5-0 District). They are deep, in shape, quick and they play the full 32 minutes with a plan and considerable structure on offense and defense. This is a well drilled squad that schooled Siegel last week.
I have my doubts that Siegel paid attention while loosing on the road but we shall see.
Siegel at 14-6 (4-1 District) is also quick and deep and they certainly can score in bunches but they often run amok and really struggle on defense but, and this is critical, they have some very good athletes.
Both Blackman and Siegel appear to be getting better.
The other four teams could finish in any order and it wouldn’t surprise me.
On this Sunday morning, Oakland at 9-12 (2-3 District) is third and beat La Vergne while La Vergne (11-10; 2-3 District) beat both Smyrna and Riverdale which is why the Wolverines are fourth.
At 10-10 (1-4 District) Riverdale is fifth and beat Smyrna. The Bulldogs are 11-11 (1-4 District) and in last for now.
Personally I think inconsistency has been a major problem for the last four teams. They could finish in any order and the order they are in this morning is going to change.
But mark my words, everyone will have double digit wins before this is over.
District play will resume this Friday. |
